　グラミー賞ノミネート，ｂｍｒ誌は2008年ベスト50アルバムの4位にランク，と多方面から高い評価を得た本作。70年代あたりの古き良きソウル・ミュージックと，ストリート感覚あふれるヒップホップなどを融合させたスタイルは，ある意味，今時の「王道」なのだが，並外れた歌唱力が「ヒップホップ･マーヴィン」とまで言わせしめるオリジナリティを与えている。
仰々しいまでにシンフォニックな幕開けから一転，冷ややかなピアノのフレーズをバックに愛を語る「Hello Love...」。ピアノを基調としたシンプルで淡々としたトラック上で，最初はニヒルを装いながらも徐々にヒートアップしていく「Woman」。いかにもGテイストなシリアスな空気が漂うが，ここで状況は一変。続く「Love Drug」は，フィリー･ソウルを想起させるロマンティックなバラードで，サビのコーラスが実に心地良い。そして「Energy」。愁いを帯びたメロディー，流麗でジャジーなピアノ，スリリングでドラマティックな展開にクールなラップが絡むという極上のアップテンポ。この序盤の展開が実に素晴しい。ところが，ここで唯一の疑問曲が。テンプテーションズの「My Girl」を大ネタ使いした「Friday」だ。いや，大ネタ使いというよりは「替え歌」か。カバーするわけでもなく，おいしいフレーズをループしたわけでもなく，別の歌詞を「My Girl」の節で歌ってみました的な感覚は今イチ乗り切れない。
中盤では，夜の深淵に吸い込まれてしまうかのような退廃的で幻想的な「Marathon」（Floetryが参加），70年代ソウルの空気を再現した明るく爽やかな「Butterflies」，繊細なヴォーカルが胸に染みるアコースティック・バラード「She’s Not You」。終盤では，ファルセットも駆使して切ない想いを情感たっぷりに歌い上げた「Empty」，カントリー･ソウル的な素朴で温もりを感じさせる「Four Letter Word」，ほのかにブルージーで適度にメロウなギターが心地良い「Some Kind Of Way」と，聴きどころは多いだけに「Friday」の安直さが悔やまれる。
とはいえ，秀作には間違いないわけで，個人的にはお薦めの1枚。特に父親がジャズ・ミュージシャンであっただけにサウンドへのこだわりも垣間見えて聴き応え十分です。
