　この映画はアクロバット的な忍者映画の先駆となった映画だと思う。この後、映画やTVにこのような忍者が登場したのではなかろうか。それまで独立プロで主に活動してきた山本薩夫監督に大映の永田社長自ら映画製作を依頼してきたという。現代劇と思っていたら、雷蔵主演の時代劇をということで、当初は当惑したらしい。その当時、たまたま「赤旗」に連載中の村山知義の原作があって、この企画を提案したという。永田社長は尾上松之助の忍術映画のイメージで興味薄だったそうだが、監督は「科学的な忍者映画」と売り込んだという。赤旗の件も地方紙といって曖昧にしたとか。それよりも村山知義という名が効いたそうだ。
　さて、中身は階級闘争を時代劇に移したような山本監督ならではのものだが、アクションが多く充分に楽しめる。忍者の首領役の伊藤雄之助が何と言っても出色で凄い。また信長は徹底した悪役なのも面白い。演じているのは若山富三郎だが、大映時代は城健三朗という芸名であった。
　なお、山本監督の雷蔵評は京都の時代劇スター独特の雰囲気はなく、つねに前進的な考え方の持ち主として高く評価していた。

　とにかく懐かしかったー、今の時代、こんな忍者物
多分、見ることは出来無いような、実際眼にしていない感じだったし。
　わたしが子供の頃は、隠密剣士　なんて時代物で忍者も良く出ていたし、
撒きビシ、水団の術に手裏剣、そしてあの走り方と、縄抜け方法、
暗殺の仕方、天井裏、床下に忍び込み、からくり屋敷とか、
とにかく良かったー!!!!
　面白いので、今の若い方々にもお薦めしたいです。
　
　ストーリーとしては、これも結構複雑に出来ていて、
わたし方の織田が出て来るので、どちらの味方をしたら良いものやら的ながら、
石川五右衛門の実はという噂も知ってはいたけれど、そのもので表現されて
おり、しかも永遠・天下の雷蔵様が演じるのだから溜まりません!!!!!
　まだ若い頃の雷蔵さんらしく、可愛らしさの方が強い気もするのは、
単に役のせいでも無いのでしょうか。
　
　邦人俳優で１番好きなのが、この雷蔵様なわたしは、ずっと昔、偶然に
ある殺し屋　という映画をちらとテレビで視て以来、ファンになって
しまったのでした。
　素敵な人が古い映画に出ているので、母にこれは誰と聞いたところ、
市川雷蔵よ、という答えで、名だけは知っていたのだったか、さすがに
目立って違うオーラが出ているんだなあ、二枚目だし、なんて思ったのでした。
　その時、既に亡くなられていてとても残念でした。
　後にファンクラブの存在も、テレビで知ったものでした。
　
　夫が注文してくれと言うので、わたしゃあんたの秘書じゃないわよ、と言いつつ、
それはもう雷蔵様ですから、むひひものでした・・。
