クラシック・ファンにとって年明けの風物詩といえば、もちろんウィーン・フィルのニューイヤー・コンサート。テレビやラジオを通じて50か国以上に放送されるこのコンサートを毎年楽しみにしているファンは多いことでしょう。今年はフランスの巨匠ジョルジュ・プレートルが指揮台に招かれました。ニューイヤー・コンサートの歴史上、フランス人が指揮を務めるのはこれが初めてとなります。プレートルは1986?91年までウィーン交響楽団の首席指揮者でもあったので、ウィーンには馴染みの存在でもあります。毎年凝った選曲で楽しませてくれるこのコンサートですが、今年はプレートルが登場するとあって、フランスをイメージした作品ばかりで構成されました。《ナポレオン行進曲》やカドリーユ《オルフェウス》はニューイヤー・コンサートで初めて採り上げられる作品です。ヨーゼフ・ヘルメスベルガー2世(1855-1907)はウィーン国立歌劇場でカペルマイスターの任に就いていた人物。またマーラーが指揮者だった時代にはウィーン・フィルのコンサートマスターでもあり、その後任も務めた存在です。彼の祖父ゲオルクはシューベルトの友人であり、名ヴァイオリン奏者ヨアヒムの師。ウィーン国立歌劇場の前身、宮廷歌劇場時代の指揮者やコンサートマスターでもあります。さらに同名の父ヨーゼフはヴァイオリン奏者兼作曲家。同じくウィーン宮廷歌劇場の楽長として指揮やコンサートマスターを務めました。2世は2005年に生誕150年、2007年に没後100年を迎えたことから今回もプログラムに組み込まれたというわけです。また、定番のアンコールの前に《スポーツ・ポルカ》が入っているのは、2008年にオーストリア(とスイス)をホスト国としてUEFAヨーロッパ選手権が開催されるため(ウィーンでは決勝も行われる)。《中国のギャロップ》は北京オリンピックを考慮してのことでしょうか。元日の楽しみを、テレビだけでなく、是非お手元に。


Album Description

The New Year's Concert in Vienna has been a glorious tradition for over six decades. A best-selling classical event, the concert has a unique global appeal. It has been broadcast on TV and radio to over 50 countries, and is viewed by tens of millions of people all over the world. The 2008 New Year's Day Concert will be conducted by the eminent conductor Georges Prre, the first French conductor to receive this honor. The concert program for January 1, 2008 will be the customary collection of Strauss delights, but this time with a French theme. Receiving its first performance at a New Year's Concert, Napoleon March op. 156 by Johann Strauss II will open the program. The traditional encores of Blue Danube Waltz and Radetzky March will be joined by the Sport Polka as a nod to the European Football Championship to be held in Vienna in 2008. The Summer Olympics in Beijing is also being saluted by the orchestra with an early work of the elder Johann Strauss, his exotically colored Chinese Gallop.

初めてのフランス人指揮者の登場だと言う。意外かもしれない。しかし今回あらためて認識したのは、ワルツとはヨーロッパに普遍的な舞踏の一形式であったということだ。ベルリオーズも、ウェーバーも、チャイコフスキーも、Ｒ，シュトラウスもみな美しいワルツを書いている。なぜ「ウィンナワルツ」だけを特別扱いできようか。プレートルの演奏は、実に甘くて、美しくて、楽しい。洗練され屈託のないところは「フランス的」なのかもしれないが、この楽しさはワルツの真髄である。今までのウィンナワルツの聴き方は（これは私だけではあるまいが）、いかにも｢ウィーン的でなければならない」と決めてかかってきた気がする。それがかえって、Ｊ．シュトラウスをはじめとするオーストリア出身の作曲家のワルツのよさを殺いできてしまったかもしれない。

これまであまりニューイヤーコンサートを楽しく聴いた記憶があまりない。いつも｢型どおり」だった気がする。しかし、今年のは、踊りなどのアトラクション的なものの気の利き方もあり、楽しかった。何よりもプレートルの指揮がよかった。年は確か８０くらいだろうと思ったが、とにかく音楽が若い（全曲暗譜していたのには驚いたが）。プレートルといえばプーランクのスペシャリストというイメージがあり、私も彼のプーランクのＣＤを愛聴している。甘さ、美しさ、リズム感の良さなどは、彼のプーランクの演奏と相通じるものがある。彼がここまで健在であったとは！　こらからもう少し活躍を続けてほしいと思う。
