　ジャック・ニコルソンが初めてアカデミー賞を受賞し７０年代を代表する傑作だが、決して爽快で後味の良い映画ではない。舞台が精神病院ということもあるのだろうが、この映画を観終わって映画館を出る時はなんともいえない暗い沈んだ気持ちになった。
　本当の自由とはどういうことなのだろうか？我々がこの映画の主人公たちよりも自由に生きていると思っている実社会にだってラチェッド婦長みたいな管理主義者は大勢いるはずだ。だからといってニコルソン演じるマクマーフィみたいな行動をとれるはずもない。
　ラストのウィル・サンプソンの行動も、彼のその後が決してハッピィではないであろうことを想像してしまうから、「やった！」という感じの開放感までは得られない。
　しかしこの映画を見るたびに、自分たちの置かれている状況や体制について、「これでよいのだろうか？」という思いが心をよぎり、考えさせられる。いつまでも忘れられない作品のひとつです。

私は、最近まで17年間精神病院に通院していたので、この映画を観て、とても身につまされた。かなり強い薬を服用していたらしい。もし入院していたらと思うと、今でもゾッとする。誰でもマクマーフィのようになる可能性は、あるのだ。ラスト近くの、クリスマスの乱痴気騒ぎの後、誰しもがハッピーエンドを想像しただろう。しかし、ラストにまさかの、どんでん返しが待っている。この映画には、アメリカンインディアン独特の死生観が描かれている。見終わった後は、何もする気が起きない程、疲労感に打ちのめされた。そして、その瞬間にこの映画が私のベストワンになった。

アカデミー賞を多部門で受賞する映画は時々あるが主要部門を占める映画は少ない。本作は1975年アカデミー賞で、作品賞,監督賞,主演男優賞,主演女優賞,脚色賞の主要5部門を総なめにした歴史に残る傑作映画。作品として優れていることは勿論だが、驚くことはこの映画に出演した俳優の中に後に有名となる、ブラッド・ドゥーリフ、クリストファー・ロイド、ダニー・デヴィート、ヴィンセント・スキャヴェリなどがいることだ。主役から脇役まで名優の演技を観ているだけでも楽しめる。初めから終わりまで病院が舞台で登場人物も少ないが、これが現代の管理社会を現しているかのようだ。秩序を乱す者は排除すべきなのか？秩序を重んじるために人間を縛るルールこそが異常なのか？この映画自体はストーリーでその答えを提示しないが、ラストに駆けていくチーフの後ろ姿に開放感と希望を感じる心に答えがあるのかもしれない。
