Jazzのカッコ好さを味わえる１枚。60年代に入り、blackなJazzから少し抜け出した、知的なカッコ好さは、このアルバムならでは。

ゆったりと音が伸びていく感覚に身を委ねれば、日常とは異なった時間が流れているように感じる。Cool Strattin', Something Elseなどの名盤とは少し違って、ブルーと表現するのがシックリと来る。前者のBlackな感じとは、どことなく違うのだ。

聴いている自分が、大人で、知的で、それでいて何処か陰りもある、味わい深い人生を生きているように感じてくる。
”これこそJazzだ”と、私は思う。他のジャンルの音楽を聴いて、得られる時間とは違った質の時間を手に入れられる。

何回も何回も聴き返しても、しばらく経てば、この時間に戻って来たくなる。
そんなアルバムです。

１９６５年３月録音作。

どうしてこれが“不屈の名盤”なのか。

hancockの楽曲が何れも秀逸なこと。ジャケット・デザインと収録された５曲の曲想の印象が一致していること。演奏家５名がみな、全曲ですばらしい演奏を展開していることが挙げられる。

アンサンブル全体を俯瞰するように、視線を遠くにやって、じっ…と傾聴するのもよし。各人のソロの行方に慎重に耳を澄ますのもよし。hancockのピアノが生み出す余韻にひたすら浸り続けるのもよし。疲れ切っての帰宅後、独り静かにtony williamsのシンバルで癒されるのもよし。

個人的に最も好きなのは３曲目“little one”でのgeorge colemanのソロ。そしてタイトル曲のhubbardです。もう４０年以上も昔の録音ですが…。このひびきは不滅ですね。

マイルス･コンボに在籍中の若手ピアニスト、ハービー･ハンコックがリリースした60年代ジャズの進路を示した快作。ジャズにありがちな恋や愛の歌ものも黒人の苦しみをプロテストする叫びからも無縁なアウトドア感覚とでもいえそうなタイトルである。マイルス・コンボのトランペットをＦ･ハバードに変えただけのメンバーだが、マイルス色は一掃され、さわやかで新鮮なモーダルな編曲とアドリブが展開されている。Maiden Voyageはまさに船出のイメージをもった曲だが、おそらくこの新しさは60年代新主流派ジャズの進出の象徴にもなったはずである。The Eye Of The Hurricaneのすさまじさ、Dolphin Danceの楽しさなどきき所がいっぱいである。惜しむらくは録音に迫力がなく、コールマン、ハバードといいソロをとっているのにか細い音に聞こえる。しかし、コールマンのフレーズは実に新鮮だ。マイルス･コンボでも健闘しているが、ハンコックのコンセプションにマッチしている。音色の豪快さには欠けるが、もっと評価されていいサックス・プレイヤーだ。
