   ケニー・バレルの魅力は、そのブルージーなギター・プレイにある。といっても、それは真っ黒な感じではなくて、どこか都会的で洗練された感じのアーバン・ブルース。だからバレルが最高に輝いているのはブルースを弾いている時だ。アルバムでいうと、本作がまさにそれ。オープニングの<1>が始まった瞬間、思わず鳥肌が立つ。4曲目のタイトル曲にさしかかると恍惚の境地。そしておなじみの<6>になると、もうどうにでもしてくれと叫びたくなる。

   とにかく本作はブルースのオン・パレード。しかもスローありミディアムあり、あの手この手で楽しませてくれる。単にブルースをやっているというだけでなく、それぞれの曲に表情があり、泣かせるメロディばかりなので満腹感を味わえる。ブルージーなギターと相性がいいのはオルガンとサックスというのが相場だが、本作ではスタンリー・タレンタインのテナー・サックスが、これまた持ち味を発揮したソウルフルな演奏で、ジーンと胸に染みる。（市川正二）

　いまだにケニー＝バレル以上のジャズギタリストは出現していないのではないでしょうか？　あくまでも私の持っている乏しい音楽感覚と経験からなのですけれど。

　もちろん、ものすごい速弾きの出来る人やクラシックギターの奏法を取り入れている人など、ケニー＝バレルよりもテクニック的には上のギタリストは現在数え切れないくらいいますが、当時セッションにおけるジャズギターのお手本とも言える奏法を確立し、それでいてこれほどスウィングする音色を奏でるこの人の演奏スタイルは、現代でも全く色あせることのない「永遠のスタンダード」だと思います。

　この「ミッドナイトブルー」はケニー＝バレルがブルーノートに残した偉大な足跡であり、名盤中の名盤と言って良いアルバムです。
　
　一度は部屋の照明を少し落とし、じっくりと音世界にひたって聴いて頂きたいアルバムです。

１９６３年録音だからもう４０年以上前のアルバムだが、マイナー調の日本人好みの曲が多く、いつ聴いてもあきない。とりわけ表題曲の「ミッドナイト・ブルー」など、洗練された中にもブルージーな雰囲気でごきげん。スタンリー・タレンタイン（テナー・サックス）の演奏も絶妙。（松本敏之）

ハードボイルドに決めたブルースなアルバム。ケニーバレルは昔、むちゃくちゃかっこいい男であったのであるということを証明している。ただ、僕がプロデューサーだったら、４曲目の"ミッドナイトブルー"をいきなり頭に持って来て、どうだまいったかかっこいいだろう、で売りまくりたいのですが。。サウンドは、RVGがリマスターしただけあって、まさしくブルーノートな音。ECMのマンフレート・アイヒャーと方向性は全く違うものの同じように強烈に個性的。（ちなみに、僕はあんましRVGは好きじゃないです。ブルーノートのブランドイメージにマッチした作った音なので。日本では好きな人が多いので、私は間違いなく小数派..　別にかっこよければそれでいいですけど。）
