　この第２集に収録されているのは1.「マイスタージンガー」第１幕への前奏曲、2.「オランダ人」序曲、3.「ローエングリン」第３幕への前奏曲、4.「パルジファル」第１幕への前奏曲、5.「パルジファル」第３幕への前奏曲の５曲。ちなみに第１集には1.「タンホイザー」序曲、2.「タンホイザー」ヴェーヌスブルクの音楽、3.「ローエングリン」第１幕への前奏曲、4.「トリスタン」第１幕への前奏曲、5.「トリスタン」愛の死の５曲がおさめられている。
　どれも素晴らしい演奏だし廉価であるから２枚とも買って間違いはない。わたしは学生時代に「マイスタージンガー」前奏曲をきいてつよく惹き付けられた経験から、こちらにレビューを書いた。
　カラヤン/BPOによる1974年録音の「マイスタージンガー」前奏曲は徹底したレガート奏法によって演奏されており、いまもってきわめてユニークであるが決して奇妙ではなく、まことに美しい。中間部分の「ベックメッサーの動機」が伝統的な戯画化なしに、まるで木管の室内楽のような精緻さで演奏されるところもききものである。去年（2007年）のバイロイト音楽祭においてベックメッサーの復権を主張する演出がなされたときくが、カラヤンのここでの演奏からすればそうした発想も無理なく理解できるような気がする。まあ、ワーグナーの楽劇演出はいかようにも料理できるので、その事実にアリバイをもとめるつもりはないが、それ以前にもなにかの文献でベックメッサーの復権を主張する文章を目にしたことがある。カラヤンの姿勢を簡単に申せば「その部分をスコアであたっても、カリカチュアライズを要求する表情指定は無い」ということだ。
　ワーグナーの序曲・前奏曲については、たとえば「品のよくないサワリ」「初心者のための景気づけ音楽」といった形容がしばしばなされるが、わたしにはどうもそうは考えにくい。これらの序曲・前奏曲のすべての全曲盤を複数セットきいてきた経験のあとでも、このディスクを棚から取り出す回数はまったく減らないからである。
　「カラヤンのワーグナー美学」を端的に知ることのできる１枚として、つよく推します。
