村上春樹の短編小説『トニー滝谷』を市川準監督が長年温め続けてきた企画として映画化。音楽を坂本龍一が手掛け、ピアノを基調とした静粛で美しいサウンドが印象的なオリジナル・サウンドトラック。 小説の持つ匂いや低い温度感を、実験的な手法と透明感溢れる映像によって繊細に描き出された作品。1981年の大森一樹監督『風の歌を聴け』以来、村上春樹作品の数少ない映画化。

市川準監督はライナーノートの中で、こう記している。

―「無くてもよかったような」音楽を作って欲しいと、今思えばとんでもないことを、坂本さんに言ってしまった。―

「無くてもよかったような」音楽。難しい注文だ。観客に覚えられてもいけない。ただ、あの低温感のみを頭に染み込ませる…
しかし、全曲とは言えないものの(厳しいが)1、3曲目の、DNA(Intro)は、見事にその注文を成し遂げている。一部、やや気になる(わざとらしさ)はあるものの、この冷たさ(いわば、零度の美)は、期待通りのものだろう。

坂本ファンのみならず、零度の美を味わいたい人は、ぜひ聞くべきだ。

坂本龍一のこの音あっての、この映画、「トニー滝谷」。
静かに美しく流れる、時を捉える音。
儚いことの美しさを感じさせてくれる映画であり、音楽です。
心がざわざわとしてシンドイ時こそ落ち着かせてくれるセラピー音楽かもしれません。
「しーん」として、自分のいる空間の温度がなくなる感じがしますよ。
是非体感してみては。

このアルバムには、
「solitude」と題された曲が４ヴァージョン収められているが、
どの曲にも、独特の、静謐な、うつくしさがある。

作曲者が、北極圏への流氷観測の旅を経験してきてからの作品だが、
これらの曲には、しーんと引きしまった、
はりつめた、それでいてヒューマンな冷たい温度がある。

その雰囲気は、
ラリー･カールトンのソロアコースティックギターアルバム
『alone but never alone』に似ているし、
マイケル･ナイマンの『エネミー･ゼロ』の「ローラのテーマ」や
『ピアノレッスン』の「Big My Secret」の出だし部分、
グレン・グールドのブラームスにも近しい。

ＣＤには、
一枚の白い紙が同封されていて、
市川準監督とイッセー尾形氏のエッセイが収められている。

その中で尾形さんは、このアルバムについて
「音が音自身に耳を澄ます」と、的確な言葉で感想を述べている。
