先ず島谷ひとみのカバーといえば、「亜麻色の髪の乙女」の素晴らしい出来が思い出されます。その音色明るく可憐な歌声が、詞中の女性の心とよく合い、原曲以上にその女性を本当に優しい男性のもとへ翔けて行かせる姿を想像させ、そこに新しい意味を付加させていたからです。

しかし、今作は歌うのにキャリアを必要とするような、歌の上手さや音色だけでは制御できない格調高いスタンダードが並びます。実際それらの曲では歌に若干の物足りなさがありました。先達の歌に血を通わせ自分の事のように歌う自在さがあと一歩なのです。それは掌握力や説得力の若さゆえ仕方ないことかもしれません。ベテランによるカバーの場合、経験により歌を掌握する力が一曲一曲に新しい風景を生み、付加価値の発見があります。それがあってこそカバーは音楽的意義が生れるものですが、今作は他の若手のカバー同様、歌声として新しい試みをしていたり、歌声の中に新しい価値を見出す要素は全体的に少なく思えました。カバーとはただ歌っただけで成立するわけではないので。
他方、必要以上になよなよした節回しが気になり、「レイニーブルー」など素直な歌い方に綺麗さが宿る歌も、旋律が甘ったるく感じます。意図的にしては9や11等やや過剰さも。他に「恋しくて」もnoonの透明なカバーと比較できます。

しかし聴き所もあるのです。例えば「ESCAPE」の高速ベースプレーから巻き起こるグルーヴ。これはクールな編曲で曲全体が熱を上げ何度もリピートしました。また11の編曲も数ある同曲カバーの中では面白味があります。一方似合うという意味で歌い方が味を持つ「キャンディー」はジャズの妖しく華美な色彩とマッチしますね。また超スローテンポにした「月の裏で会いましょう」や「初恋」「幸せな結末」もそう。原曲が既に甘美だったり歌謡曲だと彼女の歌い方をとりこむようです。特に「奏」は原曲が裏声を多用するので彼女の節回しにぴったりでした。

昔、島谷さんが歌った「亜麻色の髪の乙女」は、すごくポップに仕上がっていたのですごく期待して買いましたが、このアルバムはアレンジが単調のせいなのか全曲同じような感じになってしまっていて期待はずれでした。
このアレンジならオリジナルのまま歌ったのを並べた方が良かった気がします。

２番煎じなのは確かでしょう。
でも、元々「亜麻色の髪の乙女」でリバイバイバルブームを起こした島谷さんなだけに、本家が殴りこみかけたとでも言いましょうか．．．
「レイニーブルー」があるのもアンチ的な痛烈なカウンターパンチでしょう。

曲は名曲揃い。
アレンジはシンプルにジャジーなテイストでボーカルの魅力が光る形で好感が持てます。
「島谷ひとみ」という“ボーカリスト”の存在がはっきり出ています。

部屋でゆっくり聞くのも良いですが、ドライブのお供にすると助手席の人とも口ずさめていいのでは。
