前のお二方のレビューをみて嬉しくなったので小生も少し。佐分利信…この人に子供の時があったのかしら、その重さと渋さ。「暖流」は３０歳位だが今の同齢と比べるのも愚かな貫禄。この人と共演すると流石の笠智衆も必要以上に痩けて見える。この作品の役柄ではなおさら。今見直すと（自分の歳のせいか）女優陣が皆それぞれに美しい。ことに田中絹代と有馬稲子。高橋貞二が持ち味を発揮して笑える。全集の特典映像の中で桜むつ子が懐かしげに明かしているが、「ナンキンマメ！ナンキンマメ！」のカットは３０回余もやり直しだったそうである。その彼もこの翌年自動車事故で早世、享年３２歳。惜しいが佐田啓二ともども日本映画の衰退を見ずには済んだ。ともあれ、これは極上の小津安二郎映画に違いない。

原節子は出演しないし、笠智衆は脇役だが、小津映画のエッセンス満載の傑作だ。いつもながらの娘の結婚を巡る家族のちょっとした波乱、親同士、娘同士の絆を軸に筋は展開する。大事件が発生する訳ではなく、似たような話なのだが、小津映画は作品ごとに工夫をこらして、飽きることがない。本作の場合は、娘（有馬稲子）が父親（佐分利信）の反対をおしきって結婚したり、笠智衆の娘（久我美子）が同棲生活を始めたりして、父親達を失望させるのだが、最後には娘の幸せを願う気持ちになる。「親は子供の幸せについていくべきなんだ」「子供が幸せになりゃ、親はそれでいいんだ」「結局は子に負ける」という父親の子供への愛情の発露。結婚の本質を捉えた「真鍮を金にする。それが本当の結婚だ」も名台詞。家族を持つ者として心に染みる。そして、本作を特徴づけるのが、独特の統一感のとれた色彩美。冒頭のクレジット・ロールから引き込まれ、昭和３３年の空気を満喫できる。

豪華な女優陣の競演も期待に応える。でしゃばり過ぎずに娘の望む結婚へと父親を誘導する母親役の大女優・田中絹代の、妻・母親の一つの理想像を演じる貫禄・たたずまいはさすが。浪花千栄子は芸達者だし、山本富士子は大輪の花のようなあでやかさ。非のうちようがない。

父親たちが小料理屋（女将は高橋とよ）で一杯やったり、クラス会を開くシーン（どちらも中村伸郎がいい味出してます）、部屋の中の静物（例えばヤカン）を何気なく捉えるショット、どこからともなく聞こえるオルゴールやピアノの音など、他の小津映画でも登場するパターンは本作でもふんだんにあるが、私はこの小津映画の世界が好きでたまらない。駅の場面から始まり、去り行く列車のカットで終わる整合性。本作は小津映画の様式美の１つの頂点を極めた作品と評しても過言ではないだろう。

　　昭和33年になってようやく、本作で小津監督は初のカラー撮影にチャレンジする。当初モノクロで撮る予定だったが、大映のスター山本富士子が客演することにもなったし松竹上層部からの勧めもあって、文字通り彩を添えることとなった。ただし、当時一般的であった米国のイーストマンではなく、西独のアグファのカラーシステムを採用したために、全体的にメリハリの乏しい、くすんだ感じになっている。ところがこれが今となっては逆に新鮮で、なんともいえない味を醸し出しているのだ。しかもアグファは赤の発色に優れているので採用されたという説もあって、なるほど赤の深みには独特のものがある。カラー撮影のセンスはもちろん撮影監督に負うところが大きいのだが、本作の厚田雄春のキャメラワークと、翌年大映に乗り込んで製作した「浮草」での宮川一夫の才気煥発の仕事を観くらべるのも一興か。

　久々にこの映画を観なおして感じたことは佐分利信の存在感。いつもセリフをボソボソ言ってるだけのような感じで、うまいんだかヘタなんだか全然わかんない役者さんですが、独特の重みで、画面にでるとビタっときまる。まるでジョン・ウェインみたいです。もしかしたら天性の映画スターかもしれない。彼が出演している他の小津作品は「戸田家の兄妹」「父ありき」「お茶漬けの味」「秋日和」。みんないい味出てます。

　あとは、浪花千栄子、山本富士子母子による京都弁の掛け合いが上質の漫才をみているようで笑えます。対立する佐分利と有馬稲子を常に暖かいまなざしで見つめる、田中絹代の泰然自若とした演技も全然イヤミがなくて素敵。さすがは大女優！小津監督は脇役に見せ場を作るのが本当にうまいですねえ。これまた必見です。
