シャルル・ミュンシュが、トスカニーニのオーケストラ、ＮＢＣ交響楽団を指揮したコンサートの記録。トスカニーニの有名な引退コンサートの直前、１９５４年３月２８日の演奏会のライヴ。もともとはトスカニーニ自身の指揮で行われる予定だったものであるが、急遽、しかも説明なくミュンシュにバトンタッチしたものだったとのこと。録音はこの手のものとしてはかなり良い方で、クリアー。曲目からしても十分楽しめる。オーケストラはかなり優秀。アンサンブルも見事だし、ソロパートの妙技が冴える。ドビュッシーの『イベリア』は、トスカニーニのものと較べても面白い。ミュンシュというとかなり速いテンポで疾走するイメージの指揮者であるが、これは客演ということもあり、アンサンブルに気を配り、テンポを引き締めて、かなりかっちりしたスタイルが前面に出ている。それでも、所々ミュンシュならではのテンポ感が出てきて面白い。トスカニーニの熱っぽい演奏とはまた違う個性的な『イベリア』となっている。ラヴェルの『クープランの墓』、ルーセルの『バッカスとアリアーヌ』も名手揃いのオーケストラの妙技が冴える演奏。演奏といい、録音といい、歴史的な演奏の記録としてはかなりの水準のもの。ただ、あえてこのＣＤを買うほどの突出した凄みには欠けるように思われ、総合的に見るならば、コレクター向け、つまりミュンシュのファンが楽しむもの、というところであろう。但し、特筆すべきはボーナスに付いているドビュッシーの『ダフニスとクロエ』第２組曲。１９４９年のニューヨーク・フィルハーモニーとのものですが、これがかなりスケールの大きい名演！　オケの凄さもさることながら、ミュンシュの骨太の演奏が素晴らしいです。
