前２作までの設定と大きく異なる点は、リプリー自身がエイリアンに寄生されているため、彼女がエイリアンと漂着先の囚人たちとの板挟みの状況に置かれていることでしょう。エイリアンからは仲間と認識される一方、本来味方であるはずの囚人との間には距離感ができてしまうという微妙な立場です。本作では、新たにエイリアンの変異種なども登場しており、エイリアンというモンスターそのものを楽しむのには十分な内容に仕上がっていると思います。ただし、「人間対エイリアン」という単純な構図を生かして恐怖感を創り出していた前２作と比較すると、大きく路線変更をした作品と言えます。

一つ残念だったことは、前作で植民地惑星を脱出したリプリー・ヒックス伍長・ニュート・ビショップのうち、リプリーを除く３人が囚人惑星に墜落する際に死亡したということでしょう。２作目の終盤ではリプリーとヒックス伍長の仲が良くなっていたので、本作で更なる展開を楽しみにしていたのですが…。

正直言ってリプリーにもニュートにもヒックス伍長にも地球に帰ってもらいたかった。しかしヒックスもニュートも墜落死でなかなか「３」を見る気になれなかった。ちなみにヒックス伍長にエイリアンが寄生しているという案もあったがヒックス役のマイケル・ビーンがそうしたら訴訟を起こすと言ったらしい。この頃の日本はバブル景気。だから囚人の惑星にも日本語らしきものや後半は日系人らしき技術者も出てくる。デビッド・フィンチャー監督はこれがスクリーンデビュー。「３」の製作には紆余曲折を経たらしいが執念で作り上げている。しかし暗闇を利用してエイリアンがなかなか姿を現さない、（当時の技術ではまだ）現せないじれったさは残る。半ば宗教的なエンディングを向かえる。やっぱり「２」の好きな人向きではない。

良くも悪くも エイリアンシリーズに汚点を残した作品ではなかろうか…リプリ-たちが不時着した惑星が 何故囚人たちの惑星なのか…
リプリ-にエイリアンを寄生させたことにより、その後の作品においても消化できなかった…など問題提起の奇抜さが後々マイナスへ傾倒してしまった。その点が2とは大きく相違する。
