ビッグバンドジャズは、個人がきちんと定められた演奏を行い、そ
の個人の旋律が絡み合って、すばらしい音楽を作り上げるものです
。トリオなどのスモールコンボのジャズは、個人が自由に演奏しそ
れぞれが刺激しあうことで、より高い音楽を求めるジャズです。つ
まり、ビッグバンドジャズとスモールコンボでは、音楽の種類が違

うもので、通常は相容れることはできません。

またオルガンという楽器は、音の存在感が重厚で、アタックが強く
、鍵盤を押さえている間は、ずっと音が持続します。オルガンの音
は大変存在感があり、他の楽器を圧倒します。ビッグバンドの緻密
に構築されたハーモニーをオルガンの音は壊す可能性が大です。

ザ・キャットでは、ビッグバンドはジミー・スミスのアドリブをバ
ックアップする下請けに徹しています。この役割の分担がザ・キャ
ットを単なるビッグバンドジャズでも、アドリブバリバリのとっつ
きにくいスモールコンボジャズでもなく、形が整っていて誰でも好
きになり、しかもアドリブも楽しく聞かせてくれる演奏になってい
るのです。

詳細に聞くと、ドラムはロックに近くバスドラムを多様して低音感
を出し、ギターは裏リズムのカッティングでスピード感を出し、管
楽器は絶妙なタイミングとテンションコードでスリル感を出し、そ
の管楽器の合間を縫うようにジミー・スミスのオルガンが走り回り
ます。盛り上げては落とし、さらに盛り上げてはさらに落とし、一

瞬の隙をついてテーマに戻る。緊張感の連続です。

なんでもジミー・スミスはビッグバンドができるからという理由で
古巣のブルー・ノートレーベルからヴァーブに移ったとのこと。オ
ルガンジャズの開祖ジミー・スミスは、ビッグバンドをバックバン
ドに従えることで、よりポピュラーな誰でも楽しめるジャズを目指
したのです。

ジミー・スミスを最初に知ったのは中学のとき。ザ・キャットといういささか印象的な曲に乗った実にソウルフルなオルガンによるジャズとの出会いだった。何かの番組のタイトルバックに流されていたのだが、その番組は覚えていない。しかし僕のジャズ史の中でも、テイク・ファイブやＡ列車で行こうなどとともに最も古い付き合いであり、それだけに印象が強烈であった。ジャズオルガンという楽器はきわめて音が強く、ここでもビッグ・バンドを従えての演奏だが全く引けをとらないアタックの強さオーケストラレーションを聞かせる。ジミー・スミスはヴァイブのミルト・ジャクソン、ギターのウエス・モンゴメリー、フルートのヒューバート・ロウズ同様、インパクトと個性を持ったミュージシャンだといえる。そしてこのアルバムこそそんな彼の決定版といえるベスト集である。
