歌うことにかけてサラ・ボーンほど才能に恵まれている歌手は少ないだろう。音域の広さ、豊かな声量、即興性などどれをとっても一流だし、何よりもオペラ歌手にもなれそうな綺麗な声は女性ジャズ・ボーカルの中でも群を抜いている。しかし、なぜかそんなサラを僕はあまり好きになれない。うますぎて逆に愛着がわかないからなのか、あるいは判官びいき的に欠点のあるアニタ・オデイや癖のあるカーメン・マクレーあたりに食指が動いてしまうからなのだろうか。いずれにしても、数枚持っている彼女のアルバムはなぜか聞き飽きてしまう。ところが１枚だけ別格なのが、このアルバム。なんといっても１曲目のバードランドの子守歌１発で参ってしまう。アニタ・オデイやクリス・コナーも名唱を残しているが、数ある「バードランド」の中でも最高傑作だと思う。そこにはいわずと知れたクリフォード・ブラウンのオブリガードやソロが絡んでくるからなのだが、両者の相性もぴったりである。エイプリル・イン・パリ、エンブレイサブル・ユー、セプテンバー・ソングといったバラードが実にしっとりと歌いこまれ５０年代ジャズの最良の部分がドキュメントされている。この曲を文字通り子守唄として聴きながら過ごした日々が懐かしく甦ってくる。
