「この素晴らしき世界」は、本当に味のある歌唱ですね。ご存知のように悪声で、メロディというよりも語りのような歌い方で、昔の評価なら失格ですが、これがとてもステキなのです。声を聞くと幸せで温かい気持ちにさせてくれる不思議な歌です。どこか物悲しく聞こえるのは、貧困と悲哀の中で過ごした子供時代の生い立ちのせいでしょうか。

1967年、アメリカはベトナム戦争のまっただ中の頃、66才のサッチモがこれを歌い、彼の死後、ベトナム戦争を描いた戦争映画での音楽として使用されました。

♪草木は緑で　赤いバラが咲き 空は青くて　雲は真っ白　ぼくはひとりつぶやく この世はなんてすばらしいんだろう♪
サッチモの飾らない歌声によってハート･ウォーミングな懐かしい世界が広がっていきます。一言一言噛み締めるような歌い方ですのでとても説得力があります。
ハスキー・ヴォイスといえば聞こえがいいですが、昔はだみ声と称しました。けれどサッチモの声を聴くと、その朴訥な歌声の中にとても温かいハートを感じます。歌心あるシンガーです。彼にかかると魔法のようにジャズの発祥地ニューオーリンズの街角へと我々を誘ってくれます。

若い頃、人種差別を受けながらも、ジャズ・トランペッターの第１人者として認められてきました。きっと、いやなことが沢山あったでしょうが、すべてその笑顔で包みこんでしまいます。包容力の大きさまで感じさせる温かい歌声は他のジャズシンガーを寄せ付けません。ヒーリング効果は抜群です。
