仕事に疲れてささくれた神経を癒す時、このジョアン・ジルベルトの『三月の水』は、私にとって無くてはならない音楽の一つです。

まるでそこで歌っているかのように収録されたせいでもないでしょうが、リスナーの心の奥深いところにまで届くボサ・ノヴァの心地よさ。ヴォーカルとギターとソニー・カーのハイハットのみという至ってシンプルな編成ですが、奏でられる音楽はまるで雪舟の水墨画のようであり、マグリットの絵画のようにどこか神秘的で、一筋縄ではいかない複雑さを秘めています。

この『三月の水』のＣＤをボサ・ノヴァの入門として最初に聴くには、通好みの選曲と歌唱ですのでどうかなと思いますが、ある種の最高の音楽を最初に聴くことによって、ボサ・ノヴァの魅力の真髄に触れるのもまた良いかもしれません。

冒頭の「AGUAS DE MARCO（三月の水）」は、ジルベルトの自家薬寵中の曲ですが、このバージョンの崩し方もまた彼の個性の表出です。とてもこのように歌えませんし、演奏できないからこそ、ボサ・ノヴァの神様であり続けているのです。音楽の神ミューズが乗り移った求道僧のようであり、自由な翼で大空に羽ばたいているフェニックスのようであり、流石にこれに勝る歌唱はないでしょう。もっともこの曲の作曲家アントニオ・カルロス・ジョビンとエリス・レジーナの絶妙のデュエットもお気に入りではあるのですが。

2曲目のアフリカの音楽を用いたような「ウンディユ」なんか、ミニマル音楽のようでもあり、環境音楽のようでもあります。ボサ・ノヴァの既成概念なんかこの曲を聴くとぶっ飛びます。シンプルでしかも印象的な音楽ってなかなか聴くことはできません。またギター演奏の卓越さは3曲目の「バイーア(靴屋の坂道で)」で堪能してください。ラストは、当時妻だったミウシャとのデュエット「Izaura（イザウラ）」で見事に締めくくられています。

ヴォサノヴァを世界的音楽に育てたのは、アントニオ・カルロス・ジョビンとホアン・ジルベルト。そのジルベルトの代表作にして大ヒット作。表題曲「三月の水」「喜びのサンバ」など、ＣＤやレコードを持っていなくとも、聴いたことがある曲ばかりだろう。甘い、少し「粘る」ようなジルベルトの歌い方は、夏に似合う。美人歌手のアストラッド・ジルベルトは、この人の奥さん（元奥さん）です。（松本敏之）
