   一般にジョン・コルトレーンというと、激しくブロウする姿をイメージする人も多いだろうが、その一方で情感豊かなバラード演奏にも真価を発揮した。優れたジャズマンはみなブルースとバラードの名手であり、コルトレーンも例外ではなかった。

In 1962 John Coltrane was under assault from conservative critics who had labeled his tumultuous extended performances "anti-jazz". In response he entered the studios to create this classic collection of both well known and obscure ballads. Coltrane was one of jazz's greatest ballad players, a fact sometimes overlooked in the controversy that swirled about his work, and his lyrical gifts are in sharp relief here. They're transmitted through one of the most beautiful tones that jazz has ever produced, suggesting a rare metal that has just been discovered. テナーサックスの帝王、神様とジャズファンの多くはコルトレーンを呼ぶ。しかしジャズ喫茶のオーナーでもあり評論家の寺島靖国さんは、「コルトレーンはテナーなのに音域がアルト・サックスに近くて生理的に嫌だ」と言う。コルトレーンは前衛すぎる。難解だ。暗い。と思っている方。ジャズを聴き始めてまもない方。ぜひ聴いてください。１曲目のＳＡＹ　ＩＴ、２曲目の「あなたは愛について知らない」など、思わずギスギスした日常を忘れさせてくれる。お酒も思わず進んでしまう。マッコイ・タイナーのピアノ。全盛期のエルビン・ジョーンズのドラムも素晴らしい。毎日聞いても飽きない一枚。（松本敏之）

トレーンのバラッド集。一見普通に聴くとおしゃれなＪＡＺＺアルバムという趣ですが、よく聴いてみるとトレーンが力いっぱい全身全霊を込めて音を紡ぎだしているのが分かります。ですので、それに気づくてしまうと聴いていてどことなく緊張してしまいます。いつも激しく吹くのが多いトレーンにしては、静かなアルバムで異色かもしれませんが、これもまた良し！なのです。これもまた超人気盤でＪＡＺＺを聞き始める人が通る道ともいえるでしょう。

なにも言葉がありません。コルトレーンのサックスに耳を傾けるのみです。
普通、サックス奏者のバラード楽曲は、どうしても、ムード音楽になりがちで、飽きがきます。
コルトレーンのバラードは、甘くならず、歌心のもった音を生みだします。天才たる所以です。
私の愛聴盤で、毎日のように聴いてますので、say it のフレーズが鳴るだけで、疲れた心が癒されます。
ジャズ愛好家は、誰でも知ってるし、持っているアルバムでしょうから、ﾚﾋﾞｭｰはいらないんでしょうね。
