本作の舞台となる海底油田採掘基地が、実は巨大なプール内に作り上げられたセットだということを知り、そのスケールの大きさに驚きました。浅いプールを深海に見立てるために、水面を黒いボールで埋め尽くして遮光するなどいろいろ苦労して映像を作り上げているそうです。また、恐らくはクシクラゲをモチーフにデザインしたと思われる深海型の未確認飛行物体は、当時映画館で観た時にはなかなか斬新な色彩と形状だと感心したことを記憶しています。

映画の中には潜水作業風景がふんだんに盛り込まれていますが、静まり返った海底で一人作業をする孤独感が観ているこちらにも伝わってきます。実際にスキューバをする人たちが観れば、特にその緊張感や恐怖感がよく理解できると思います。

本作で描かれている未知の生命体は、自然破壊や戦争によって地球を破壊し続ける人類に対して警鐘を鳴らす役割を担うとともに、深海という極限状況において人間の強さ・素晴しさを再認識させ、もう一度世界を託す機会を与える「神様」のような存在として描かれているのではないでしょうか。背後の社会的メーセージはどうあれ、深海での人間ドラマ（とくに夫婦愛）を描いた映画として十分に面白い内容だと思います。

　ジェームズ・キャメロン監督作品としては珍しく大コケしてしまいました。内容としては「未知との遭遇」の焼き直しのような話なんだけど、キャメロンの作品のなかではもっとも人間を真摯に描こうとした映画でもあり、見せ場であるはずの大津波のシーンを当初カットしてしまったことからもキャメロン監督のドラマを重視させる意気込みが伺える。後半の夫婦婦愛の描写は少しくどく、結果としてはもうひとつだったが、意欲は十分に伝わるし、「タイタニック」のような取って付けたようなつまらない恋愛ドラマではない。
　すこし冗長ですけど、ＣＧの素晴らしさもあってまあまあの出来となった。キャメロン監督に興味のある方は一度はご覧になってみるべきかと思います。

ABYSSとは、地球表面に生存する生命たちから
隔絶された、未知なる世界。
人間がそこに挑戦するには大きなリスクを伴う。
あえてABYSSに挑む男たちの、暑い息づかいが
聞こえてきそうなドキュメンタリー的なドラマ。
特殊効果が少し見え見えな感もあるが、逆に
そこがドラマにより真実味を加え、緊迫感を
強調させているところがおもしろい。
何度も何度も見てしまった。とくに、リンジーを
蘇生させようと必死になるシーン。泣けます。
