海辺に立つ「イルマーレ」に越してきたソンヒョン（イ・ジョンジェさん）は、ポストの中に前の住人であるウンジュ（チョン・ジヒョン）の置き手紙をみつける。でも、日付はなぜか２年先の1999年。不思議に思いつつ、返信をポストに入れておくと、その手紙は２年先のウンジュに届いた！　この不思議な文通を通じて徐々に惹かれ合ってゆく２人であったが、そこには時間の壁が立ちはだかっているのだった…。

２人の間にある、２年という時間の壁が絶妙。ソンヒョンは1997年のウンジュには会えるけれども、その当時の彼女はまだソンヒョンのことなど全く知らない。自分の想いを直接彼女に会って伝えることの出来ない彼のもどかしい気持ちが伝わってきました。ストーリーの巧みさもさることながら、この作品のもう一つの魅力は映像の美しさとBGMの心地よさだと思います。とくに、夕暮れの済州島の砂浜でウンジュがソンヒョンを待つ場面などは、バックに流れる歌の切なさとあいまって胸にグッとくるものがあります…。

チョン・ジヒョンさんは本作の撮影時にはまだ十代だったこともあって瑞々しさが漂いますが、イ・ジョンジェさんは穏やかで暖かみのある表情で落ち着いた演技をしています。イ・ヒョンスン監督の作品は本作が初めてでしたが、全編を通じて風景・建物・内装・小物・音楽などに都会的なセンスを漂せる仕上げ方は見事だと思います。

実は、あまり期待せずに観た。
というのも、正直、韓国映画においては、期待を裏切られることが、あまりにも多く続いていたから。
でも、この作品は、それらとは全く違った。

息をのむほどの、映像の美しさ。
日本人でも違和感を覚えずに済む、抑えた感情表現。
一連の韓国映画ブームの枠に収まらない、普遍的に優れた、美しい映画だと思う。

作品の持つみずみずしさから、てっきり若い監督の作品かと思いきや、監督は1960年生まれだそうである。
寡作の監督であるようだが、今後も注目したい。

傑作、猟奇的な彼女の次作品。
これがまた、ガラッと、一変。
ハイセンス、清々しさ、せつなさ、斬新さ。
どんどん、引き込まれる、ストーリー展開の巧みさ。
映像の美的センスも抜群。

ラストは、愛は運命をも変える結末。

お見事としか表現出来ない傑作。
