あくまで自分がそう思っただけなので、こういうアンダーワールドが好きな人もいるかも知れないけど…。

まず1曲目のシングル「Crocodile」。ちょっと地味ながらクールなダンスミュージックって感じで好き。
2曲目「Beautiful Burnout」はアナログシンセが何重にも重なって美しい。New OrderとかDepeche Modeみたいな密室的なダンスミュージックが好きならハマると思う。

最初の2曲だけがアッパーな感じで、残りはなんだかユルい。
4曲目に至ってはアンビエント。15年前にAPHEX TWINが作ってそうな。
ジャケットが「Dubnobasswithmyheadman」そっくりだったので「原点回帰か」と期待してたのに、どうにも締まりが感じられない。初期Underworldの密室的でひんやりしてるけど情熱的なサウンドが好きだったのに、このアルバムは何かが違う。
しかもなんだか音がくぐもって聴こえづらいように感じる。これが最先端の音なのだろうか？

言われているように、サウンドとしては、「ワンハンドレッドデイズオフ」の音色＋ファーストの雰囲気といった感じです。フロア向けの曲は全くなく、音色の美しいミディアムテンポの家でゆったりと聴ける大人の落ち着いたアルバムとなっています。はっきり言って「Ｒｅｚ」や「ボーンスリッピー」のイメージしかアンダーワールドに抱いてない人には退屈でしょう。最近地味な活動ぶりだったのであまり期待していませんでしたが、最高傑作・・・では決してないものの、彼らを昔から聴いてきた人ならまあ納得の出来ではないでしょうか。

ひたすらに美しいアルバムだ。
前作「ア・ハンドレッド・デイズ・オフ」もなかなかの出来だったが、これもまたいい。
「Dubnobasswithmyheadman」において、カール、リック、ダレンはややダークさ加減を純粋なテクノに忍び込ませた。
本作にはダレンはいない。が、「ダブ〜」のテクノを思わせるような出来のアルバム、それが本作だ。違うのは「ダブ〜」時代より洗練されていることと、ダークさが薄くなっていること。それがカールとリックの感性とテクにより、見事なテクノが出来た。
私が一番好きなのは２曲目、「ビューティフル・バーンアウト」だ。ダークネスとトランス感覚が見事にマッチした名曲。アルバム後半の曲群も好きだ。どこかダダイスティックな感じがして、個人的に気に入っている。
これを気に入ったら、ライヴアルバム「ライヴ・アット・オブリヴィオン・ホール」をどうぞ。
