オープニングからマカロニウェスタン調の佐藤勝の音楽に乗せて砂あらしが吹く宿場に現れる高橋悦史と仲代達也はかなり印象的。典型的な時代劇の殻をやぶる岡本喜八の演出が炸裂する。原作が山本周五郎（「砦山の十七日」）なので、藩を建て直すことにやっきになる若侍をサポートする主人公達という設定は黒澤明の「椿三十郎」（原作はやはり山本周五郎）と似ているし、「用心棒」と同じ久世竜の殺陣もさえてきまっている。特に冒頭の暗殺シーンは迫力満点。
砦山に七人の若侍が立てこもってから彼等を助ける元侍の仲代達也は椿三十郎に重なるが、今回は浪人ではなくヤクザにアレンジされておりより喜八的でもある（助太刀屋助六に通じるところがある）。一方、農民あがりで武士になろうとし、仲代をサポートする高橋悦史は突進型の殺陣が活きている。
ストーリー的にも娯楽面を重視したテンポの良い喜八節が炸裂してマカロニウェスタンを彷彿させる痛快さを十二分に味わえる（黒澤も「用心棒」がマカロニウェスタンに影響を与え日本に逆輸入されたというところか）。
そして登場人物のなかでも、砦山に立てこもる若侍たちの暗殺を命じられる浪人集団たちから組長と呼ばれ親しまれるストイックな浪人を演じる岸田森は極めて印象的。彼の役がこの物語の隠し味になっていることは間違いない。
全体的に娯楽性を追及し、迫力満点の殺陣と癖のある役者で固めたエンターテイメントといえる。時代劇といって敬遠すると損をする逸品だ。

5.0 out of 5 stars 「椿三十郎」と見比べてみるのも楽しいかと, 2007/12/18
･･･と、いうのも、原作が同じ山本周五郎であり、世間知らずの若侍を一癖も二癖もある浪人者（といっても本編での源太は勢いあまって無宿者にまで成り下がってしまっているけれど）が助けるというシチュエイションが似通っているということで、公開当初から比べられることが多かったんですね。
しかしながら、登場人物達の「キャラ立ち度」は明らかに本編の方が上かと思われます。それに何しろ「椿･･･」には弥平次が居ないですし(笑）。主役の二人は勿論ですが、敵役の浪人隊の隊長の岸田森の伝説的なかっこよさに見とれ、若侍達の若さゆえの突き抜けたアホっぷりに呆れ、初代黄門様のおトボケぶりに笑い･･･と、色々見所の多い映画です。是非ごらんあれ！

最初は岸田森目当てで見たのですが、岡本喜八という素晴らしい監督を知ることとなり、そうした意味でも大好きな映画。喜八映画はあくまでも娯楽作。映画に教訓してもらいたければ別の映画を見ろ。
