北欧が生んだ暗黒神「OPETH」による初めてのオフィシャルライヴアルバムです。2007年発売。2006年11月9日、ロンドンでのライブを収めたものです。すでにリリースされているDVD作品では彼らの「動く姿」を観ることができるわけですが、ライブCDとしては初めて、しかも2枚組という圧倒的なボリュームは大変な朗報です。CD１が約60分、CD２が約35分収録。

収録曲数は計9曲。最新作「Ghost Reveries」が中心と思いきや彼らのデビューアルバム「Orchid」から1曲、「My Arms,Your Hearse」から2曲、「Morning Rise」から1曲、「Still Life」から1曲、「Blackwater Park」から2曲、「Damnation」から1曲、そして「Ghost Reveries」から1曲と初期から最新作までまんべんなく取り上げられている点がミソです。彼らの持ち味である「プログレッシブ＆ブルータリティー」の二律背反的展開が最も生かされる選曲ではないでしょうか。それにしても1曲の平均が10分を超えるという相変わらずの大作志向ですね。

驚くべきは初期の作品であってもまるで時代を感じさせないばかりか、こうして生々しいライブ演奏によって新たな息吹と果てしないエナジーが吹き込まれ、まるで新しい楽曲として感じられるという点です。もちろん演奏としては完璧。相変わらずミカエル・オーカーフェルトが自ら作り出す美醜の鮮やかなコントラストは、まるでパノラマを見ているような錯覚を覚えます。ファン心理としてはスタジオ盤の新作を求めたくなりますが、年代を追ってライブで再現される彼らの軌跡に触れることは決して悪いことではありません。初期の作品も収録されているので、彼らの「入門編」としてもお勧めできます。しかも、CD2枚でこの値段は絶対にお買い得です。

スウェーデンのプログレッシブ・デスメタルバンド、オーペスの2枚組ライブアルバム。
正規のライブ作品としてはDVDを除けば初になる。
70年代を思わせるプログレッシブな感性と、北欧らしい暗がりの静寂を感じさせる叙情で
ひと癖あるデスメタルリスナーからプログレリスナーまでを虜にしているこのバンド。
演奏力も抜群なので、スタジオ盤以上に迫力のあるサウンドにぐいぐい引き込まれる。
彼らの場合、楽曲はどれも10分台は普通で、Disc1は全6曲で60分、Disc2は3曲で35分。
センス溢れるギターリフとメランコリックなフレーズ、そしてどこかレトロなシンセワークが重なり、
時に「これはプログレなのかデスメタルなのか」という答えのない惑いを覚えるほど。
激しさから静けさへの絶妙のシフトは、リーダーであるミカエル・オーカーフェルドのデス声と
マイルドなノーマルヴォイスの使い分けとともに、このバンドの二面性をまざまざと表している。
過去のアルバムから現時点での最新「Ghost Reveries」までの曲を聴けるので、
あるいはいまだオーペスを知らないという不届きな方にもベスト代わりに勧められるだろう。

プログレの暗黒王opethの初のLIVE CD。

全期に渡り満遍なく収録されていて、
現時点でのベスト的な役割も兼ねそう。

LIVEだと、ミカエルのデスヴォイスはさらに破壊力と禍々しさを増し、
逆にメロウヴォイスはさらに感情が込められ、憂いを帯びています。

そして、LIVEならではの奥行きのある響きが、
よりopethの暗黒な世界と、哀愁の世界を強調させています。

もう、身震いするほどのかっこよさです。

LIVEアルバムが嫌いな人にも、演奏も忠実で安定していますし、
音質も良い為、一度聴いてみる価値はあります。
オリジナルアルバムではネタ切れ感を感じるところはありますが、
LIVEを聴いてると、「やっぱ凄いバンドだ･･･」と感じます。
