いまなおジャズロックシーンに睨みをきかせるジョン・マクラフリン率いる「マハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラ」が1974年と1984年にモントルー・ジャズフェスティバルに出演した時の模様を収録したものです。1984年のメンバーはBill Evans (sax)、Marsha Westbrook (sax)、Mitchell Foreman (key)、Jonas Hellborg (b)、Danny Gottlieb (ds)。1974年はMichael Walden (ds) やフランスの鬼才Jean-Luc Ponty (vln)をはじめとした弦楽器も加わった総勢11名の文字通りのオーケストラ構成。もちろんBill Evansはピアニストのほうではありません。

Disc１（1984年）は80年代型マハヴィシュヌで、おそらく海賊盤を含めて初出映像ではないでしょうか。まず1曲目「Radio-Activity」で聴かせるもの凄い勢いのソロギターでまず驚きます。極論すればこの１曲だけでも十分な価値があります！全体的には80年代以降の「HOT路線」につながる現代風ジャズフュージョンという感じで、マクラフリンはギターシンセを中心にプレイしています。個人的にはマハヴィシュヌ加入で一躍有名になったスウェーデン出身の超絶ベース奏者、ヨナス・エルボーグの若々しい姿に興味を感じました。

Disc2（1974年）は70年代後期マハヴィシュヌの映像。これは一部、海賊盤で出回っていますのでご覧になった方も多いかと。個人的な本音ではヤン・ハマーやビリー・コブハム、ジェリー・グッドマンを擁した前期マハヴィシュヌのほうを観たかったのですが、いよいよインド思想に傾倒した時期での神秘的なステージを見ることができます。もちろんギターはギブソンのダブルネックで、６弦と12弦を巧みに使い分けるマクラフリンの姿を目の当たりにできます。個人的にはトランス状態に陥ったかのようなマイケル・ウォルデンの鬼気迫るドラミングと鍵盤兼女性ボーカルGayle Moran（ご存知、チック・コリアの奥さん）の神秘的な姿が印象的。もちろんジャン・リュック・ポンティの動く姿も貴重だと思います。Disc2は映像自体は約50分間で、マクラフリン自身がリマスターした1974年パフォーマンスのオーディオトラックが3曲収録されています（音声じゃなくて映像を観たい！）。

ディスク2枚で総収録時間は約220分。この濃密な内容でこの値段は絶対にお買い得です！日本盤も売り出されるようですが、所有の海外盤は「リージョンフリー」で手持ちの国産プレイヤーでも再生可能です。特に解説にこだわらなければ廉価な輸入盤がお買い得です。それにしてもやはり最近発売のウェザー・リポートのDVD作品といい、モントルー物は侮れません。

ご存知、ｇのジョンマクラフリン率いるマハヴィシュヌオーケストラが、７４年、８４年のモントルージャズフェスティバルに出演した際の演奏を収録したＤＶＤです。
８４年時の演奏は、現在のＨＯＴ路線に通じるハイテンションなフュージョンサウンドになっています。復活したマイルスバンドに在籍したｓａｘのビルエバンスも素晴らしいのですが、やはり、特筆すべきは、ｂのヨナスヘルボ−グでしょうか。表情、プレイとも切れた演奏を聞かせてくれます。
７４年の演奏では、これまた切れたｄｒのナラダマイケルウォルデンのプレイが見ものですが、個人的には、やはり、動くｖｎのポンティを見れたことでしょうか。彼のソロアルバムで聞かせる叙情性とは裏腹に、結構、激しいプレイをしてるんだと、へぇと驚かされました。
そして、やはり、御大マクラフリン。８４年は、ギターシンセを中心に操る姿が見れますが、やはり行きかかった（というより行っている）７４年のプレイが見ものでしょうか。
何れにせよ、これまで海賊版でしか見れなかったマハヴィシュヌを見ることができる、貴重なＤＶＤです。
