「Sugar High」以来、じつに4年10ヶ月ぶりとなる4thアルバム。「傷口を照らす光が欲しい」「私はまだ死んではいない」というあまりにも切実なフレーズを持つ「Angelina」など、(自分の嫌な部分を含めて)内面をしっかりと見据えたうえで生み出される楽曲は、さらに深みを増している。しかし、本作は決して"重くてシリアス"というだけの作品ではなく、カントリー/フォークのエッセンスを感じさせるサウンドのなかで「人生は長いのだろう」と歌われる「Sweet Rosemary」(彼女自身、"この曲はすごく好き"と発言している)に象徴されるように、"生きる"ことに対する真摯な気持ちもしっかり込められていて、聞き終わった後はむしろ暖かい印象を受ける。ジョニ・ミッチェル、キャロル・キングなどにも通じる、スタンダードな手触りのメロディも素晴らしい。「everyhome」「僕等 バラ色の日々」をはじめ、すべての楽曲のプロデュース/編曲を小林武史が手がけている。(森朋之)

　長いブランクの後にリリースした彼女の4枚目のフルアルバムです。
　以前の3作とはプロデューサー・アレンジャーが違い、今作は小林武史氏が手がけています。

　以前の3作に慣れ親しんだファンは次のような感想を持つのではないでしょうか。すなわち「曲にインパクトが足りない」「以前のような劇的なアレンジがなく、淡白な感じがする」「歌唱力が落ちた」などです。確かに、今回は以前のような、一聴して圧倒されてしまうようなインパクトのある曲や歌唱は少ないかも知れません。また、小林氏のジャジーなギターを入れてみたり、ほんわかした音色のシンセサイザーの音など、アレンジ面で違和感を感じる部分も多いのも確かです。

　しかし、何回も聴いていると、彼女のもともとの魅力である、「良い楽曲良いメロディーを飾らずピュアに歌い伝える」という部分はいささかも損なわれていないし、むしろ、以前より抑制を効かせながらひとつひとつの言葉を大事にした歌い方になっているようにも感じます。つまり、迫力やインパクトは減りましたが、彼女の微妙な息づかいや言葉のつむぎ方に耳を傾けていると、すごく深みのある楽曲が多いことに気づきます。それに気づいたとき、私は彼女の表現者としてのゆるぎない強さを感じ、ますます彼女を尊敬するようになりました。

　そういう意味で、小林氏が今作での彼女についてインタビューで言っていた、「より等身大のロック歌手になった」というのも確かに頷けます。しかし、だからこそなおいっそう、次作からは個性の強い小林氏ではなく、もっと彼女の歌や曲の魅力をダイレクトに引き出すことのできるプロデューサー・アレンジャーと組んでもらいたいと思わせます。そして実際、現時点での最新シングル「蛍」からは坂本昌之氏と組み、新たなスタートを切り始めています。

鬼束デビュー時からの大ファン、で、このアルバムが発売されたとき、わたくし事ですが、心の病気で、職と家を失いました。親友と恋人も無くしました。
昔のファンの時の気持のままだったら、たぶん、せっぱつまった初期のアルバムと比べて「日よったな」と思って聴いたと思います。でも、そんな状態でeveryhomeとsweetrosemaryを聴いたら涙が止まりませんでした。１枚目、２枚目のアルバムは、絶望的な気分の私の心に響いたけど、本作は、絶望する力もなくなった、何も考えることのできなくなった心に響きました。
これは、やまいから還った人にはぜひ聞いてほしいです。
ご本人もインタビューで、「歌唱力落ちた」と言っていますが、everyhomeのＰＶを見たときこの曲に必要とされてる声は、今までの卓越した歌唱力じゃなく、今の彼女の絞り出すような囁くようなかすれた声だと感じました。

他の方も仰ってましたが、聴けば聴くほど味が出る…感じのCDのような気がします。それに、昔より迫力が落ちていても、目を閉じて曲を感じ取ろうとすると…一つの輝きが生まれてきます。その輝きは、昔の鬼束さんと変わらず、彼女にしか生み出せない輝き。彼女の世界の輝きは、まだ変わらず生きている。私はそれに感謝します。
