面白かった！心の深い部分で、感動しました。

20世紀初頭のヨーロッパ。エドワード7世の世から、ジョージ5世に引き継がれ、サラエボでのオーストリア皇太子暗殺に始まった第一次世界大戦勃発の経緯や、ロシア皇帝ニコライ2世一家が銃殺されるロシア革命など、激動の時代を、幼いころのケント公ジョージの目線と、知能障害と癲癇の発作があり夭折したジョンの目線で、英国王室を描く。

あの当時、障害を持って生きるというのは、大変だったのだと思うのですが、英国王室にも、知的障害をもった、王子が実在し、彼がどう生きたのか、を描くというのは、どれだけ事実であるかは、疑問があるにしろ、とても意味があるように思います。

ジョンは、かわいく、自由で、潔く、正直なのですが、それゆえに、王室という閉鎖的な世界では、彼は、オープンにされることなく、地方で、隔離されるように育ちます。どんなに、隔離されようと、愛することに勇敢であった彼は、側にいる人たちには、深く愛されます。

これは、ミニドラマの作品で、前後編が一つの映画のようにDVD化されています。激動の時代ゆえに、まるで、彼の人生、というか、心は、その戦火と正反対の場所にあって、愛するということに勇敢であった少年は、時代に取り残されたような生活をしています。ま、これは、隔離されたということもあるのですが、隔離されなくても、この殺伐とした時代には、正反対な場所で、生きたことでしょう。その勇気ある生き方には、とても感動しました。ほんとうに、彼は、天使であったのかもしれません。

このドラマを観て、次に興味を持ったのは、これからの英国王室。どう、エリザベス2世につながっていくのか。ジョージ5世の次は、エドワード8世。ただ、彼は、「王冠を賭けた恋」という、王室関係者や政府が認めない女性と結婚したため、途中で退位。そして、病弱であったジョージ6世が、王位を継承しましたが、若く５０代で心労がたたり、亡くなってしまいます。そして、彼の長女、エリザベス２世が即位する。女王は、家族思いであった、父王を深く愛していたため、エドワード８世を生涯、許さなかったそうです。どの時代も、ドラマになる王室です。

　このＤＶＤを見て、初めて知的な障害を抱えた王子がいたことを知りました。
そして、20世紀初頭という時代の中で、王家という特殊な一族であるがゆえに、一家族としての苦悩を隠さなければならなかったということも知りました。
　メアリー王妃は、他の本でも子どもに対する関心は薄かったと書いてありますが、高貴な生まれで自分自身が乳母に育られていたら、自分の子どもであってもどう愛情を表現すればいいのか、考えが及ばなかったのでしょうね、きっと。
　一方、乳母のララさんは、本当に前向きにジョン王子を支えて愛して教え導いていて、あの献身的な姿には胸を打たれます。
　このような歴史に隠された物語は、今の現代の真実を知ることにもつながる、重要なことのように感じましたし、この後、エリザベス2世女王につながる歴史ももう少し掘り下げて学びたくなりました。
