ジョニ・ミッチェルへの敬意を表したこの『RIVER』。
慎重に選ばれたジョニの曲８曲とウェイン・ショーターのNefertiti、デューク・エリントンのSolitudeで構成されている。
ボーカリストとしては、ジョニ・ミッチェル本人、ノラ・ジョーンズ、コリーヌ・ベイリー・レイ、ティナ・ターナー、レナード・コーエンらが参加している。
Herbieは人生のほとんどを音楽家として歩んだ優秀な演奏家であり、作曲家であり、プロデューサでもあるが、
過去のアルバムと比べても、このアルバムでは、Herbieのピアノの音が一段と澄んでいる。「透明」といってもいいような純度だ。
そして一段と洗練され都会的なサウンドとなっている。素晴らしい。

ジャズアーティストが最優秀アルバム賞を受賞したのは、４３年前の白人テナー奏者スタン・ゲッツと
ブラジル音楽家ジョアン・ジルベルトの「ゲッツ〜ジルベルト」以来という快挙だ。
人種と肌の色への偏見は根強かった。

受賞のスピーチでHerbieはこう語った。
「今までの因習にとらわれず賞を贈ってくださったことに感謝します。
そして、私が模範としてきた巨人たち、マイルス・デイビス、ジョン・コルトレーン、本当に疑いなく賞を獲るに値した人たち・・・。
今日は不可能が可能になることが証明された夜なのです」

世界のJAZZMEN、おめでとう！

常に先進の音にこだわり、古きを敬愛し、仏教徒らしい信念で期待を裏切らない数少ない「音楽家」だと思います。
僕的には、人種にとらわれない、時には時流に乗っても、常に先を見つめている音創り。
マイルスも偉大ですが、ボクはそれ以上だと確信しています。

ジョニ･ミッチェルのファンなのでこのアルバムを買いました。
ハービーとジョニとジャズとアコースティックの融合。更に曲ごとにVo参加のアーティスト達（ノラ、ティナ、コリーヌ、レナード、ルシアーナ、ジョニ本人も参加）もまた融合してくるので絶妙な味わいになっています。
インスト曲も入っているのですが（ジョニが書いていない曲２曲含む）全く違和感のない良い繋がりです。

ハービーのアルバムですがジョニファン大満足！
日本盤のボーナス・トラックには私の大好きなケース・オブ・ユーが原曲の形を留めたJAZZになって入っているですが、
レナード･コーエンの原曲を大胆にアレンジしてそれが独特の毛色になっているジャングル・ライン(←これも素晴らしい!)で終わるより個人的にはこのアルバムらしいと思います。

これからの季節にぴったりな素敵な大人のアルバムを届けてくれたハービーさんに感謝します。
余談ですが、同時期に発売されたジョニの新作も秋にぴったりの素晴らしい作品でした。
