1926年5月米国イリノイ州アルトン生まれ。モダン・ジャズの歴史を築いた史上最大のイノヴェーター、トランペット奏者。カリスマ性をもち、“ジャズの帝王”と呼ばれた。チャーリー・パーカーのバンドで活躍後、クール・ジャズ、ハード・バップ、モード・ジャズ、フュージョンなど、モダン・ジャズの大半の音楽スタイルの中心的な創造者となる。自己のバンドから数々の有名ジャズ・ミュージシャンを輩出したことでも有名。91年9月28日没。

1986年発表。マイルスのワーナー移籍第一作。

このアルバムをマイルスのアルバムと言うか否かは難しいところである。と言うのはこのアルバムはマーカス・ミラー(当時27才)がベースだけでなくキーボード・サックス・リズムマシーン等全てを作り上げ、その上にマイルスがトランペットでソロを取っているからだ。マーカス・ミラーのアルバムにマイルスがソリストとして参加していると言うほうが正しい気がする。

『TUTU』はデズモンド・ツツ(1931年ヨハネスブルグ生まれ)という反アパルトヘイト運動の旗手で1984年のノーベル平和賞受賞者のことを指している。口癖は『手遅れにならないうちに、白人よ、目覚めよ』である。

名前すらクレジットされていないジャケットの写真は世界的カメラマン、アービング・ペン(当時69才)によるもので、コンセプト・デザインは石岡瑛子が担当している。

このアルバムを出した時マイルスは60才の誕生日を迎えている。還暦にしてサンプリング・サウンド満載の新しい音に挑む姿は『熱い』の一言である。
