ロバート・アルドリッチ監督の娯楽作品の名手としての評判は『ヴェラクルス』、『特効大作戦』、『北国の帝王』などで知っていましたが、これはユニークです。プロットの難解さからして娯楽色だけを狙ったものではないことはたしか。マイク・ハマー登場の探偵ものに極力自分なりの演出の妙を加えようとした成果がよく表れています。そこでストーリーラインとしてもお決まりのミステリーのそれではなく、その行方にはおよそ皆目見当もつかない暴力的破天荒さが用意されています。このラストへの強引ななだれ込みかたには唖然の一言。でも否めないのです。雰囲気がいい。写真のおさめかたや動き方がいい。ラルフ・ミーカーの善だか悪だかわからないあいまいさもいい。なにより、アルドリッチが商業主義を無視して入魂の映像を作り上げようとしたことに拍手を贈りたいのです。

R･ｵﾙﾄﾞﾘｯﾁ監督作は骨太のﾊｰﾄﾞﾎﾞｲﾙﾄﾞやｻｽﾍﾟﾝｽですが、本作はその初期の作品で後の名作を生み出す片鱗が随所に観られ見応えがありました。難をいえば、主人公のﾊﾏｰ役が往年のH･ﾎﾞｶﾞｰﾄなどｶﾘｽﾏ性ある名優なら言うこと無しでした。
