まず、ダニー・ハサウェイ、マーヴィン・ゲイ、カーティス・メイフィールド、スティーヴィー・ワンダーなどソウル・ミュージックからの影響が顕著な音づくりになっています。
次に、このアルバムは、初めてのキャロル・キングによる全作詞・作曲。
それから、そのため、音が切れ目なくつながりながら、ファンタジーに始まってファンタジーに終わる、という明らかなコンセプト・アルバムになっています。
最後に、女性の喜怒哀楽、反戦、人間性への信頼などをテーマにし、メッセージをこめた曲ばかりです。

ひとことで言うと、キャロル・キング版『ホワッツ・ゴーイング・オン』。でも、安っぽい真似をしているわけではなく、むしろ白人音楽と黒人音楽とが混じり合って、ひとつのアコースティックなロックンロールになっている点で、大きな挑戦になっています。

解説も有益なうえに、すでに述べたように、メッセージがこめられた歌詞は、輸入盤には印刷されていないので、歌詞・対訳もついている日本盤のほうをおすすめします。
