ああ、こんなお医者さんがいたらいいのに。（きっといるんでしょうけど。）とてもとても暖かくなる映画ですね。僕の汚れた友人の中には、美化しすぎだとか予定調和だとかヒューマン臭すぎるという人がいますが、いいじゃないですか！人間の美しさを描いているのです。気高い魂を描いているのです。これから学校の先生になる人に、「二十四の瞳」を見てもらいたいと思うのと同じくらい、これから医者になる人に「赤ひげ」を見ていただきたい！精神を病んだ女の子が高熱を出して倒れている若い医者を看病するシーンで、寝ている彼のおでこにもっともっと冷えた手ぬぐいを乗せて早く熱を下げようと、女の子は窓から降り積もった雪を悴む素手で掴み、たらいの中に入れ、手ぬぐいを絞るシーンは、女の子の心情の変化と、彼女の精神が直ってきているという両方が伝わり、、、素晴らしい演出だと思います。優しさが人の心を治癒させてくれる。本当に「人っていいなあ」と思える映画です。間違いなく傑作です！気高く勇敢で優しい魂こそが世の中を救うのです。

　５０歳を超えて初めて観ました。死ぬ前にこういう映画を観ることができて良かったと素直に感動しました。三船敏郎４５歳の演技とは・・・信じられないと言うか、自らの未熟さを痛感してしまった。加山雄三が泣くシーンなんて初めて観ました・・・それなりの演技ですが好感が持てました。皆、黒澤作品に出演できる喜びと緊張感が溢れていて素晴らしいものとなっているのだと思います。

　個々の人間ドラマを逐次語っていては、キリが無いけれど香川京子の迫真の演技には驚いた。二木てるみのイメージも変わった。当時の俳優は全て今のそれよりもはるか上を行っていたことは間違いないし、療養所のセットも白黒画面とは言え生々しいものだった。
　もう本当に素晴らしかった。これを最後に三船敏郎は黒澤作品には出ていないとは何故だったのだろうか。

　この作品は黒澤明の集大成と言われ、この作品を最後に以後、三船敏郎の黒澤作品への出演はない。またこの後、「暴走機関車」「トラ・トラ・トラ」の挫折や自殺未遂を経て黒澤監督の作風は大きく変化していく。
　集大成らしく三船敏郎、志村喬、香川京子らの常連組みに笠智衆、杉村春子のベテラン勢、加山雄三、山崎努の若手の黒澤組、新人・二木てるみなど出演者もバラエティに富んでいる。
　三船の赤ひげのもとで加山雄三の若い医師が育っていく成長物語を中心に様々なエピソードを織り交ぜて話が進んでいく形式で、香川京子の狂女や娼家の話もいいが、もっとも印象的なのは山崎努扮する佐八と桑野みゆき扮する恋女房の物語でこの話はとても感動的だった。
