　「痛快」という言葉がぴったりの娯楽映画。こいつは、えらく面白いっ！　黒澤監督のこの路線では『隠し砦の三悪人』『椿三十郎』も面白かったけれど、一番好きな映画はこれ。
　考え深げに時々あごを撫でる三船敏郎の侍と、拳銃だけでなく頭の回転も速そうな仲代達矢のやくざ者の対決の妙。三船の侍を何かと助ける東野英治郎・飯屋の親爺の味のある演技。宿場のふたつの対立勢力の間に火をつけ、油を注ぐ三船・侍の縦横無尽の機略。
　何べん見てもわくわくするなあ。きっと監督が、自ら楽しみながらシャシンを撮っているからなんだろうな。その気分が、映画の隅々に行き渡っている気がします。

　画期的な映画である。何が画期的かというと、三船敏郎演ずるサンピンこと「桑畑三十郎」という空前絶後のキャラクターを創造したこと。すなわち浪人で、見た目は汚くて、口も悪くて、武士道だとか立身出世のことなんか全然頭になくて、それでいて情にもろくて、頭は抜群に切れて、もちろん剣の腕は最強なひと。この映画以降この桑畑風浪人を主人公にした映画やTVドラマが量産されたのは、みなさん御存じのとおり。さらに影響は国境を越えてイタリアにまで及び、マカロニウェスタンにアレンジされて、ハリウッドの売れない俳優のクリント・イーストウッドをスターダムにのしあげた。

　マフラーに連発拳銃という仲代達矢の卯之助も、三船に負けず劣らず画期的。その二人が狭い宿場で繰り広げるつばぜり合いも見ごたえ十分。その他卯之助の兄の山茶花究、その弟の加東大介、彼らに対抗する清兵衛の河津清三郎、三船を助ける飯屋の東野英次郎など助演陣も鉄壁です！！

　ロングショットとパンフォーカスを駆使する、宮川一夫の撮影も完璧ですね。今からでも遅くないから、宮川さんに国民栄誉賞と文化勲章を授与しよう！石井長四郎の照明や、佐藤勝の音楽も甚だ印象的。というわけで黒澤の最高傑作には「七人の侍」を僅差で抑えて、本作を挙げたい。必見です。

昔の映画です。
ただの作り話です。
しかし、人間として普遍的なものが散りばめられているように思います。
この時代の各俳優の濃密さに圧倒されます。
悪役も単純ではなく、素朴な人間味にあふれています。
この濃密な人間味は、現代の日本人は失ってしまい、もう二度と取り戻せないものかも
しれません。
娯楽的な筋なのに、あらゆる要素が混合されています。
これを見てしまうと、ほかの映画が水のように希薄で、楽しめなくなってしまうのが欠点です。
将来、どうころんでも作れない奇跡的な作品だと思います。
