「プレゼンスオブザロード」といえば、やはりブラインドフェース。
たとえクラプトンボーカルでなかったとしてもだ。
「ワンダフルトゥナイト」といえばやはりアルバム「スローハンド」。
「レイラ」といえば.....
うーむ、ドミノズは当然はずせないとしても、アンプログドバージョンだって
やはりはずせない。しかたがない、両方入れよう。
選曲者の判断は正しい。
選曲基準にはクラプトンのキャリアを網羅したいという強いこだわりと愛情を感じる。
そのこだわりのためにレーベルの壁を乗り越えなければいけなかった。
「代表曲さえ集めときゃいいだろう」という昨今のベストアルバムとは一線を画す内容。
どのバージョンを選ぶかはリアルタイムリスナーにとっては極めて重要だ。
そして、これからクラプトンを体験していく若い人たちに“正しく”伝えていくためにも。

本作は英国盤なのでジャケ写も良い。日本盤のように素敵なブルースの2曲をショボい曲に置き換えたりもしていないので良い。ただ、これをクラプトンの入門編として期待するのは妥当ではない。クラプトン歴30年の私は正直言ってクラプトンのソロ名義の作品でアルバムとして本当に完成度の高いものは『461〜』ただ１枚だと常々思っている。曲としては素晴らしいものがたくさんあれど、アルバムを通して聴くほど価値の高い作品ははっきり言って無い。クラプトンのファンは呆れるだろうが、長いロック史上において事実であるから仕方がない。という理由からこれから先のクラプトンに優秀なオリジナルアルバムを期待するほうが間違いなのであって、そういう意味ではこのベスト盤は入門編などではなくむしろ卒業アルバムとして鑑賞するのがいいのかもしれない。そこがカルロス・サンタナとクラプトンの違いだ。

ほとんど持っている僕としてはこの企画物をどう評価していいかということが命題となるわけですが、「I Feel Free」で始まっていることにすっごくいい印象を持ってしまう。初めて当時のミュージック・ライフという雑誌で写真を見たときのクリームの印象は、今の評価を思い図ることも出来るわけがなく「いったいこいつらは何もんなんや」と所謂キワモノグループのジャンルに入れかねない一種異様な雰囲気を持っておりました。そのとき聞いたのがこの「I Feel Free」で、スゴイっと思ったらさすがという感じですが、残念ながらその時は「これはヒットせえへんわ」というすっごく短絡的な感想を持ったように記憶しとります。思えば当時から４０年です。僕のような当初理解できなかったリスナーを次から次へととりこにして巻き返して来た歴史ですね。 評価は個別的には星５つ、今更こんな企画が必要なのかという懐疑心がわくのでひとつ減点。
