反論を恐れずに言うと
Ｕ２のライブがどれも心に突き刺さるのは、
“Where The Streets Have No Name”に至るまでの曲が考え抜かれた末に選ばれているからだと思います。
どんな流れで、あの「上り詰めることを宿命付けられた曲」につなぐかが大きいのです。

「ヨシュア・トゥリー・ツアー」や「ラブ・カムズ・トゥ・タウン・ツアー」
のように“BULLET THE BLUE SKY”の後も印象深いですし
「エレベイション・ツアー」のように“All I Want Is You”の後も感動的です。

しかしこのポップ・マート・ツアーの時の
“Please”のように悲哀から躍動に転換する劇的な流れは他にありません。

10年ぶりに映像で観ても、全身総毛立つほどの恍惚感を覚えます。
なんとすごいバンドなのだろうと。

笑ってしまうほどの巨大なセット、派手なしかけ、おふざけの衣装･･･。下手するとどっちらけとなるところだが、そこはＵ２、演奏は極めて鋭くどこまでも真剣。「ＺＯＯ ＴＶ ツアー」のときほどとがった感じはなく、巨大セットの中でも埋もれず、堂々と演奏する姿は圧巻。
ディザイヤーで、途中歌詞を忘れたのか、ボノが歌えなくなってしまうのはご愛嬌。オープニングのかっこよいこと。これが10年前のライブなのかと思えてしまうほど、今見ても鳥肌ものです。1曲目の「モーフォ」も最高にかっこよい。エッジが弾き語りで歌う「サンデイ･･･」、会場内のすべてのライトが消され、ライターの光で埋め尽くされる会場内で響く「ウィズ・オア・ウィズアウト･ユー」、友人マイケルのために捧げると歌いだした「ワン」では、多分ボノは途中から泣いていたのではないだろうか。声が明らかにふるえている。一点を向いて歌詞をかみ締めながら歌うその姿、とにかく見所満載。感動必至。
ＤＶＤ化されたことは素晴らしい。映像もサウンドも満足できます。ただ、やはり値段が高いでしょう。ボーナスディスクには、オランダとカナダでのライブ映像が収録されていますが、本編にはカメラワークや編集の点で質的にやや劣ると思います。ツアーの様子をドキュメントした映像などは面白いかも。「レモン売ります」はニヤリとさせられるし、「サラエボへの道」では、当時紛争で傷ついた人々を気遣うバンドの熱い想いが伝わってきて、非常に印象的です。やっぱ、Ｕ２じゃん！って思うわけです。アダムのカットが少々少ないのが残念かな。

　ヨーロッパ発、ZOO TV ツアーは画期的なショウだった。壮大なエンターテイメント性もさることながら、予言に近いメッセージ性と祈りのような厳粛さにあふれる演出が心を打った。ポップマートツアーはそれに輪をかけると同時にチープさを売り物にしたショウだった。従ってこれまで最も安っぽいVHSでの発売しかなかったわけだ。
　大きなレモン型宇宙船から登場するという仰々しさ、ばかばかしさに始まり、いかにもファーストフード店のような巨大セットで4人がマッチョなスターを演じるという薄気味悪いほどシニカルなステージ。だが、彼らの楽曲とのギャップこそが今回のねらいである。
　しかし、本来ショウの規模が大きくなればなるほど観客とのコミュニケーション不全という問題にぶち当たるはずなのに、どこの会場であっても感じる親近感はいったい何なのだろう。明らかにストーンズとは一線を画す一体感が、そこにはある。その秘密の一端が、Disc2のドキュメントに隠されている。
　ボーナスDVDだけでも一見の価値がある。しかし、やはり値段が高いのは何とかすべきだろう。
