　1974年か75年のことだった。FM大阪が募集したサントリープレゼンツのコンサートで、ウエストロード・ブルースバンドとサウス・トゥ・サウスを聴いた。当時自分の好みはハンブル・パイとかジェフ・ベックなどで、日本のロックなどそれらの代替物でしかなく、気晴らしで聴きに行ったのだが、両者の演奏を聴いて、自分の考え方が間違いだと目を開かされた。
　特にサウス・トゥ・サウスは第１部のソウルフルなR&Bと第２部のラグタイム・ブルースの取り合わせがとても新鮮で、上田正樹の歌声は自分をとりこにした。以来ずっと、ファンである。
　今回、ひさしぶりに「この熱い魂を伝えたいんや」と「ぼちぼちいこか」がCDで復活することをとても喜んでいる。ぜひ、若い世代にもこれらを聞いてもらいたい。東のキャロルやダウンタウン・ブギウギ・バンドと並ぶ当時の日本のロックの一つの完成形がここにはある。
