時代の流れ、流行とはまったく関係のないところで、自由に鳴らされた名曲たちは、聞いていると気持ちいい。　サムの書くメロディーは、自然で、他の誰にも書くことのできないほど素晴らしい。　　そして、前作Ｅｖｅrything isに比べてギターの音色がはるかに豊かになっていて、そこがたまらなく良い。 この作品には、pixies、Velvet underground、クワ―ジ、Teenage fanclub、Built tospill、Elliott smith、sparklehorse、grandaddyの最良の部分が、ありがちな、ただのもの真似に終わることなく自然な形で消化されている。そして、ナルシズムが楽曲からも、発言からも全く感じられないところも、好きです。
　painlessはまるで、全盛期のdinosaur jrのようなサウンドだ。　ほかの全ての曲も名曲である。　　　　１stとこの２ndで、同時代の他のバンドには、届くことのできない所に手をのばしたナインブラックアルプス。　　　　　はやくも、次の作品が楽しみでしかたない。　凄いものができるだろうと思います。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　1stリリース時のLiveは凄まじく鳥肌がたったっけな。　この作品を持って来日してほしい。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　the sorry kisses もサムの曲もDavidの曲も　とても素晴らしい、僕には宝物のようなバンドです。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　いまのUKやUS音楽になじめない人、いらつく人(僕はいらつく…)、にもここでならされる音は優しく届くと思います。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　個人的には、彼らナインブラックアルプスとautolux、kills、giant dragは今の音楽の中で、別格で　ずっと聞かれていってほしい、タイムレスな音楽です。

5.0 out of 5 stars ディストーションギターを纏ったElliott SmithまたはイギリスのArt-School, 2008/6/7
遂にUKには根付かなかったNIRVANA的グランジを敢えて2000年代のUKでやるという、UKロック界の「醜いアヒルの子」Nine Black Alpsの2ndアルバム。

前作で見せた重心の低いハードでエッジの利いたサウンドは幾らか健在だが、今回は「引きの美学」と「ポップさとマイナーコードの使い分け」を重視したソングライティングにより、サウンドの殺傷力は幾らか減ったかもしれない。が、その分奥行きが広がったように感じる。それは、前作ではアコースティックな二曲に集中していた彼らのElliott Smith信仰が、ハードな楽曲の中にも良く行きわたったことを表す。アコギなども使って、憂鬱さ・気だるさも増し、彼らなりのローファイ・ノイズポップを上手く表現している。

しかし、相変わらずしっかりと良い曲を書いて来るバンドだ。アレンジでお茶を濁すのではなく、しっかりと歌を聴かせられる曲作りをしているのが頼もしい。一曲目の時点で、彼らの以前のハードなサウンドが好きだった人々は面食らうかもしれないが、USインディ好きな人ならば、このガリガリしながらもポップな感じは気に入るだろう。

ハイライトは最後の『Under The Sun』。Elliott Smith的な憂鬱な静寂から、次第に奥行きが深まっていき、ついには絶望的な浮遊感の中に落とし込まれるこの楽曲は、このアルバムにRadioheadの『The Bends』を求めた人々の期待にも幾らか応え得る、出色の出来だと思う。

残念なのは、このアルバムが本国イギリスであまり評価されておらず、日本でもそれほど知名度が無いことだ。UKロックにおいてここまでしっかりと曲を書いているバンドはそうはいないのに、残念な限りである。バンドが挫けずに続くことを祈る。

あとアルバムタイトルが、日本のArt-Schoolの同名のアルバムと完全に被っているが、直接の関係性は無いにしても、二つのアルバムが提示する世界観は近しいものがある。ああいった日本のオルタナバンド好きにも、このアルバムは聴かれるべきであろう。

前作は激しさ一辺倒だったのが、今作は哀愁を感じさせるメロディーも入り
個人的には、こっちの方が断然好み。
ボーカルの声も、こういうメロディーの方が合っているように感じる。
もちろん激しさも健在、轟音ギター＋泣きメロの組み合わせは強力！
