私は学生時代チェロを弾いていたことをきっかけにこの曲の名盤を探し続けてきました。
ビルスマなどのすばらしいCDもいくつかありましたが、心から満足できるものには出会えなかったと思い続けていました。

このCDはまず最近の録音で録音技術が申し分なく、とても良い音でチェロを聴くことができることは大きいことです。
演奏自体は大げさになることも淡白になることもなく、ひたすらこの曲に対する彼のすばらしい解釈を少しの不足もなく表現できています。私にとっては退屈する瞬間がありません。

初めて文句のつけようのない演奏に出会った喜びを強く感じています。
直感的な文章なので、具体的には他の方のレビューを参考にしてください。

ケラスの無伴奏は舞曲のリズムを第一に生かし、モダン楽器によるバロック奏法をも取り入れたような新鮮な演奏。
音色も美しいのに耽美すぎず、歌い過ぎす舞曲間のバランス、また溌剌とした表現を可能にしているしなやかなテクニックも真に絶妙。
各組曲のもつ特質を大きく捉える洞察力の鋭さは聴いていて飽きることがない。現代のスタンダードといえる演奏。
DVDには第3番の全曲演奏と録音風景が収められている。

この録音は確かに誠意はあり、「スタンダート」と紹介したくなる気持ちも分からないではありません。しかし、スタンダートとは「標準」という意味であり、標準という言葉には「もっともふつうのもの」という意味があるのを忘れないで頂きたい。
スタンダード=おすすめ、という考え方はいかにも、「普通」や「平均」または「中間」を好む大多数の日本人的な見解が滲み出ているとしか言いようの無い評価基準でしょう。

ちなみに、私はこのジャン・ギアン・ケラスのバッハ：無伴奏チェロ組曲は直ぐに聴き飽きました。音が綺麗なだけで、こちらの感情がまったくと言って良いほど反応しなかったから。思うのだけれど、ケラスは、どうしてもこの曲を弾きたかったのかしら?　もしかするとレコード会社に話を持ちかけられて録音しただけではないだろうか。などと考えてしまうくらい、何の情熱も感じなかった。
一言で表現すると、「優等生が理詰めでそつなく演奏しただけ」の録音とでもいいましょうか。

一方、私が何度聴いても飽きない同曲はというと、Gavriel Lipkind(ガブリエル・リプキン)の録音です。
リプキンの演奏はスタンダードではありません。部分によっては、非常に特異です。けれど、この曲への強い情熱を感じるとともに、リプキンの中に、この曲を演奏することでどうしても表現したい何かがあると確信をもって感じます(言葉ではなく感情で)。ですから、こちらも感情を呼び起こされ、共に音の世界を共有することができるのだと思います。
もちろん、あくまで個人的な好みの問題ですので、自分の評価が正しいとは言うつもりはありませんが、一度聞き比べていただきたいものです。

いつの世も、芸術の世界で一般に高く評価されるのは、開拓者(天才)よりも追従者(秀才)なのは残念なことです。
