ギター1本と歌だけ。リマスターで音はいいし、もうこれで十分。むしろ、この形態が1番合ってる。ギターのわざが際立つ。

ポール・サイモンは　地味で目立たないが、歌もすごくうまい。

ポールの詩はとてもわかりやすく、とても文学的。ぜひ　原文と訳詩を　味わってください。

サウンド・オブ・サイレンス：勝手にドラムがつけられて大ヒット。ポールがあとで激怒したというだけあって、ライブでは全部ドラム無し。実をいうと僕はドラムがあってほしいフォークロック大好き人間。しかし、このソング・ブックのこの曲はそれがなくても満足する。

雨に負けぬ花が入っているのがうれしい：私のＳ＆Ｇで最高に好きな歌。「コンティニュー」の歌詞の歌い方がここでは独特。後の録音のオリジナルではこれがスムーズに歌われた。〆の和音は　オリジナルより全然いい。

全曲　いい曲そろい。 安いし、買って損無し。ジョン・レノンのアコースティックを比較して聴きたくなった。

Ｓ＆Ｇのデビュー作「水曜の朝、午前３時」が不成功に終わった失意を抱えて、ポールは１年ほどロンドンに滞在し、土地の人と交流し、曲を書き蓄えて、本作を６５年６月１７日、２３日、７月５日の３日間で録音した。ポール１人の完全なアコースティック・ギターの弾き語りだが、アートの不在を全く不自然に感じさせないほど、ポールの歌には熱がこもっていて、曲の心を的確に伝える。その典型が「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」だ。この曲は短期間に３つのバージョンが生まれたことになり、どれも特徴があるが、私が一番力強さを感じるのは、フォーク・ロック化されていない本作のものだ。名曲はこの曲だけではない。曲目リストを見てわかるように、「水曜の朝、午前３時」で披露済みの曲もあるが、「アイ・アム・ア・ロック」のようにＳ＆Ｇの第２作、「雨に負けぬ花」のように第３作（パセリ・セージ・ローズマリー・アンド・タイム）夫々を飾る複数の曲が既に本作に収録されていることは注目に値する。荒削りかもしれないが、それらの名曲の生まれた直後の姿を知ることができる。本作はまさに名曲の宝庫だ。そして、ポールの純真な魂の叫びとでも形容したくなる、腹の底から搾り出すような歌は何と感動的なことか。もちろん、腕の冴えを増したポールのギターも聴きものだ。＃１０は、Ｓ＆Ｇ版よりボブ・ディランの「イッツ・オールライト・マ」あるいは「サブレタニアン・ホームシック・ブルース」の影響を感じさせ、微笑ましい。

本作は２００４年デジタル・リマスター、ボーナス・トラック２曲付き（「アイ・アム・ア・ロック」「教会は燃えている」の未発表別テイク）で、ジャケット裏面でポール自身がライナーノーツを書いている。

かつてポール本人の要望でカタログから削除され、長らく廃盤となり既に伝説になっていた『The Paul Simon Songbook』がこうして紙ジャケ復刻までされるとは・・・。前回のリマスター復刻だけでも嬉しかったのですが、ここまでしてもらえるとはまさに感無量です。

「またか」と思われるかもしれませんが、ポール・サイモンの最新ベストが発表されることですし、その他の作品の初紙ジャケ復刻といい、最近彼の評価が高まってきているのでしょうか。

かつて、ワーナーの社長が「日本でのポールの作品の売れ行きが（少ないことが）信じられない」と語ったそうですが、確かに日本での彼の評価は低すぎるように感じます。それがこうして復刻されることによって、多くの方が彼の作品を聴くチャンスが増えることは純粋に嬉しく思います。

内容は、特にポール・サイモン（サイモン＆ガーファンクル）の初期作品を知るうえでは非常に重要ですし、演奏はシンプルですがその分曲の良さが伝わってきます。単なるコレクターアイテムとして埋もれるには惜しい作品ですので、価格も手頃ですし、ぜひ手に取ってみてはいかがでしょうか？
