1982年9月ウィーン、コンツェルト・ハウス大ホールでライヴ録音。同時にユニテル社が映像を収録、DVD化されている。1983年のブラームス生誕150年祭の一環として企画されたチクルスで、クレーメルにとってこの曲はカラヤン+ベルリン・フィルと1976年3月に西側デビュー作として録音しており、二度目の録音となる。

しかしながら圧倒的にこちらが名演だ。何と言ってもカデンツァをマックス・レーガーの前奏曲とフーガニ短調作品117第6の前奏曲全曲でやり遂げた、というところが出色だ。カラヤンとの共演ではおそらくカラヤンが若かったクレーメルの主張などまったく受け入れず、クライスラーのフツーのカデンツァをやらせたと思われる。その点、バーンスタインは懐の深さが違う。クレーメルの自由にやらせ、ウィーン・フィルを見事に鳴らしている。すばらしいコラボレーションだ。

クレーメルの著書『琴線の触れ合い』には自身のカデンツァのこだわりが蕩々と述べられている。それとともにこの本の冒頭はこの録音をした時のエピソードで始まっている。リハーサル後、銀行に向かう途中、目が見えない少女がロシア語の詩をクレーメルに聞かせてあげる、と言い聞かせてくれた。そのお礼にクレーメルはストラディヴァリに触れさせてあげたようだ。そういう『琴線の触れ合い』の後の自分の思うとおりのカデンツァでの演奏、悪いわけがない。兄貴分のように面倒見のよいバーンスタインの様子も描かれていて必読だ。
