内容紹介

【ストーリー】
戦乱の到来を契機に大商いを目論む陶器の名工源十郎と、息子と家族3人で貧しくともささやかな幸せを望む妻の宮木。
そして、侍として立身出世を夢見る源十郎の弟・藤兵衛とその妻。
やがて源十郎と藤兵衛はそれぞれの妻を故郷に残して都に出るが、
源十郎はそこで怪しい美女に出会う。

　ヌーベルバーグの監督たちが評論家時代に、日本映画最高の監督は「ミゾグチ」である、と位置づけたのは、この映画を観てからである。エイゼンシュテインのモンタージュ理論の対極に位置する、溝口の「ワンシーン・ワンカット」の撮影技法の迫真性は言語や文化の壁を軽々と乗り越えて、トリュフォーやゴダールなどの「若造たち」の心さえもをわしづかみにしたのだろう。クレーンを使って登場人物を俯瞰で捉えて、移動しながら撮影するという溝口の普遍的なキャメラワークは、その後のゴダールやベルトリッチ、さらにはアンゲロプロス等の作品に容易に見出すことが出来る。

　田中絹代、森雅之そして小沢栄太郎らの名演技に加え、白黒のコントラストに絶妙の冴えをみせる宮川一夫のキャメラ等、見所満載ですが、美術が水谷浩でないのが唯一の心残り？それでもやっぱり何もかも失った森雅之が自分の家に帰ってからのモノ凄い演出にあらためて脱帽、最敬礼です。

　でも、個人的には戦後の溝口のナンバーワンは昭和26年に新東宝で撮った「西鶴一代女」。その次に昭和29年の「近松物語」。そして本作かな。それでも色あせぬ永遠の名作。必見です。

溝口作品の中で最も好きな作品です　映像美を含めストーリーもかなり面白くあっという間に
時間が過ぎます　役者陣もそれぞれの良さを最大に発揮しています　音楽も何もかもが完璧
ラストは本当に凄くて感動しました。　もうどういっていいか解らないぐらい素晴らしい
是非見てください　それしかいえません

おぼろげな灯りを背景に浮かび上がる幽霊の影、真っ暗闇の中にきらめく白刃、夜明けのあばら家の隙間から差し込む朝日。モノクロ映像ではあるが、ライティングにかなり高度なテクニックを駆使しているのが伝わってくる作品だ。溝口監督の代名詞となっている＜長回し＞が封印され、非常に短いシーンのみで構成されているのは、物語の流れよりも映像の美しさを優先させた結果なのかもしれない。

商売の成功や立身出世のために家族を捨てる藤兵衛と源十郎。その犠牲となる女房の宮木と阿浜。本作品は、藤兵衛にとり付く若狭役の京マチ子の妖艶な演技がクローズアップされがちだが、藤兵衛の女房・宮木を演じた田中絹代の地に足のついた演技が印象的だ。まるでＮＨＫの女子アナのようなしっかりとしたしゃべり方は、当時早口でしゃべる俳優が多い中で一人異彩をはなっている。けっして美人ではないが、不思議な存在感のある女優さんだ。

上田秋成の原作９編の中から２編を抽出し違和感なく合体させたオリジナルの脚本は見事。陶器職人の藤兵衛を慕う２人の女を、同じ幽霊として登場させながら対照的に描き出した演出もすばらしい。ヌーベル・ヴァーグを牽引した世界の名だたる映画監督たちがリスペクトを寄せる、巨匠・溝口健二の世界を十分に堪能できる傑作だ。
