『ワルツ・フォー・デビー』と同日の1961年6月25日 ニューヨーク、ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードにて録音。わずか11日後、1961年7月6日に25歳の若さでラファロを交通事故で失うことになる。

言ってみれば双子のアルバムである『ワルツ・フォー・デビー』だが、実際はこちらの『サンデイ・アット・ザ・ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード』の方が第一集だった。この日はライヴの最終日でもあったらしい。でもよく考えるとTake1からTake3まで存在するライヴということは、実際はヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードでの何日かのテイクをまとめたうち最も良くできた演奏をアルバムにしたものというのが真相なのかも知れない。そうでなければ『All Of You』や『Gloria's Step』を一日に3回も演奏したことになる。

そういった些細なことはともかく。聴き出した瞬間から世界が変わってしまう。ビル・エヴァンスはスコット・ラファロという不世出の天才を得て、ピアノ・トリオを発明したのだ。ひたすら静かに輝くビル・エヴァンスのピアノはこのトリオの持つ計り知れない可能性を確信しているかのようだ。

リバーサイド４部作の中で、最もラファロが活躍しているのが、このライブだ。1曲目のグロリアズステップ（自作）からあいさつ替わりの長尺のソロを取る。やや大きめのベースの音が左チャンネルから聞こえる。つづく２曲目のバラッドで、リーダーはビルエヴァンスだったことに気づく。そのタイトルは、”マイマンズゴーンナウ”。本作録音直後事故死したラファロの追悼だろうか。ジャケ写の不機嫌なエヴァンスはそのことを暗示しているのだろうか。指だけでピアノを弾くポーズは、ラファロの死を意味するのだろうか。
とっても繊細で危ういバランスの上の立つ３人のプレイが、前作エクスポラレーションズを彷彿とされるライブだ。ドラムスのモチアンは少し引っ込みで、エヴァンスとラファロのインタープレイが前面に出ていところが良い。ラファロの音程がしっかりした歌うベースとリリカルなエヴァンスのピアノをじっくり聴いて欲しい。
リバーサイド４部作は、デビー、ポートレイト、エクスポラレーションズ、ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードの順に聴くのが一番良い。

ワルツ・フォー・デビーと同日、同じヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードでのライヴ盤。ジャズ評論家やコアなジャズファンを自認する一部の人たちは、このアルバムのほうが、「ワルツ・・・」より出来がいいと言う。しかし「ワルツ・・・」はあんなに売れているのに、このアルバムの売れ行きはいま一つ。それは「この一曲」と言える曲、「ワルツ・・・」と「マイ・フーリッシュ・ハート」のような曲がないからだ。もちろん「不思議の国のアリス」があるが、旋律を目立たせまいとエヴァンスは弾くので、「この一曲」のインパクトがない。「オール・オブ・ミー」も同じ理由だし、明るい旋律の「オール・・・」はエヴァンスに似合わない。それにジャケットも「ワルツ・・・」ほど上出来じゃない。同じような出来、同じ日、同じ場所の録音で、こんなに評価、売れ行きに差がついてしまう。むずかしいものである。しかし、このアルバムも一聴すると、なんてことはないが、聴けば聴くほど愛着がわいてくる一枚。愛聴盤とは、こんな一枚を言う。（松本敏之）
