このアルバムには２種類の「枯葉」が収められていて、録音日は両者とも同じ日付でありながらも、片やモノラル、片やステレオ録音されています。そうなった理由はどうやら、当日の録音機材の故障で、たまたま２種類のテイクが運よく残されることになったということですが、両テイクとも今までに、この上も無いほど絶賛されてきました。

そして、それでも意地悪く、どちらが好きかと聞けば、多くの人は「モノラルだ」と答えるそうです。そのように言われるといささかステレオ盤が可哀想になったりもするのですが、かく言う私も実はモノ派。ではなぜ、どこが違うのか･･･と言われれば理由は少し複雑になります。確かに多くの人が言う、モノラルの方がスリリングだということも言えるでしょう。
でも、個人的にはステレオ盤と決定的に違うのがラファロの演奏だという気もします。たとえばモノラルの開始後まもなく（１１秒後あたり）、ラファロのベースがプル〜ンと跳ねるような響きをする箇所があるのですが、ステレオ盤にはこのような音色はありません。少し大げさかもしれませんが、私はこの音色にふと魅力を感じるのです。それからのラファロのベースはまるで楽器が生きているかのような響きを続けていくのですが、ステレオ盤ではこの躍動感がほんの少し大人しく感じてしまいます。

私がモノラルに軍配を上げたくなってしまうのはこうした理由があるのです。皆さんはモノラル派？、それともステレオ派でしょうか。

Jazz初心者、Bill Evansを初めて聞く人、ジャンル問わず美しいピアノの音色が聴きたい人
すべてにお勧めできる作品。

従来のスタンダードナンバーを、これでもかってぐらいクリアに、これでもかってぐらい洗練
させた音色で表現してる一枚。「Come Rain Or Come Shine」から「Blue In Green」まで、
水の流れのように心地よく、あっという間に流れてしまう。
モチアン、ラファロとの三位一体のバランスの良さに加えて、クラシックの影響を受けてる
印象主義的で、音の余韻が長く残る、エヴァンスの優美なタッチは耳から涼風が吹き込んで
全身にすがすがしい物が伝わっていく感じがする。

リバーサイド四部作はすべて傑作だが、とりわけこの水のように広がる浩然とした音の空間は
他の作品とは一線を引いてると思う。題名通り、一番残るものが多い一枚かもしれないな、
普段何気ない所で、ふとメロディが流れてたりするから、、、

天才ビルエヴァンスの能力を最大限に見る事ができる音源です。
名曲「枯葉」は2テイク収録されていて、両方とも素晴らしい出来になっていると思います。
「いつか王子様が」も名曲ですが、エヴァンスの味が非常に良く出ていて、とてもいいです。
