Album Details

White Chalk is Pj Harvey's eighth studio album and first new material since 2004's critically acclaimed Uh Huh Her. Pj Harvey went into the studio late last year to record and produce with Flood and John Parish. The three had worked together previously on the Grammy nominated To Bring You My Love and on Is This Desire? White Chalk also includes musical contributors from Harvey's long time associate Eric Drew Feldman, and Jim White from The Dirty Three.

ほぼピアノと歌のみの11曲、33分。
今までで最もパーソナルな作品に違いない。
終始シンプルな演奏は物足りないどころか、内に秘めた感情を今まで以上に効果的に鳴らしている。
静かで、深い悲しみが全編に満ち溢れている。
だが、とても居心地が良い音楽だ。

ちなみに、日本盤にも歌詞対訳は付いておりません。

我らがポーリー嬢が孤高の域に達しました。
いや、恐るべき完成度です。
今回はピアノを全面にだした作品ということで、え？ギターは？ロックじゃないの？
なんて聞く前は色々考えてましたが、聞いて納得。
ポーリーの美しい裏声をたんまりと聞ける、とても素晴らしいシンガーソングライターアルバムになっています。
作風としては
Is This Desire?に近いかと思いますが、表現はさらにピュアで美しくなっています。
プロデューサーが　気心がしれたフラッドとジョンパリッシュ（三人目のプロデューサーはPJ自身）ということも成功に繋がったんでしょう。
この人はアーティストしての軸がなにやってもぶれないからギターだろうがピアノだろうが表現されるのはポーリーそのものだということを実感できた一枚でした。

初期のRid of Meのイメージでこのアルバムを聴くと肩透かしを食らうかもしれない。なぜなら、アレンジを最小限に抑えピアノを中核に置いた極めてシンプルなアルバムになっているからだ。収録時間も従来の彼女のアルバムに比べると短い。が、彼女の音楽にあった独特のザラザラした聴き心地は失われておらず、真正面から音楽と向かい合いいいものを作ろうという基本姿勢は何も変わっていない。キートラックとしてはシングルカット曲を除くとやはり#2Dear Darknessと#7のSilenceか。上手くコンパクトにまとめてこれだけの作品を作れるのはさすが。ただ、巷のアレンジされ過ぎた楽曲に慣れたリスナーにとっては受け入れ難い作品かも。シンガーソングライターやアダルトオルタナティヴ、弾き語りが好きな人にはマストアイテム。
