最もシリアスな第一作。そのシリアスさから、シリーズ最高傑作であると思います。
特に、自殺願望の最終兵器、メル・ギブソン演じるマーチン・リッグスのキレたときの過激な一面と悲愴感、
ダニー・グローバーやその家族たちとの交流から心を開いていく過程などが、
じっくり描かれていて、その丁寧な描写との対比で、アクションシーンがより引き立てられています。
そして、ラストはやっぱり一対一で殴り合いだ！
マイケル・ケイメンとエリック・クラプトンの音楽も渋い。

ロス市警殺人課のリッグス刑事とマータフ刑事の２人の活躍を描いたシリーズ第一作。一作目の本作では、コンビとしての初捜査での麻薬組織との戦いを描いている。無茶なリッグスとまじめなマータフとの間で繰り広げられる掛け合いが魅力のシリーズ作品ですが、本作では妻を事故で失った過去を引きずるリッグスの姿が前半で強調されているため、シリアスなストーリーに感じました。一方、そんなリッグス刑事がマータフ刑事と彼の家族と触れ合う中で立ち直り、互いの絆を深めてゆく過程もしっかりと描かれています。コンビ結成の過程がよく分かる、シリーズの中でも重要な作品だと思います。

愛する妻を交通事故で失って自殺願望を持った白人刑事と年老いた黒人刑事のコンビ。メル・ギブソンもマッド・マックス以降ヒット作に恵まれず製作のジョエル・シルバー（４８時間やダイ・ハードなど）に口説かれて作った作品です。アメリカでは公開前から続編決定がされていたのにも関わらず日本ではあんまりヒットしなかった。友人に言わせると「ただメル・ギブソンがいじいじしてるだけじゃん」とのことだった。確かにそうだが自殺願望とか死にたいけど死ねないという気持ちは分からない訳でもないので共感できる。監督はアクションが始めてのリチャード・ドナー。後半警察がどの程度知っているか聞き出すために拉致して拷問にかけることが返って命取りになるというお話しはお粗末だがヘリに向かってベレッタＭ９２の１６連射は爽快だ。だけど拳銃撃つ時にメル・ギブソンが引き金をガク引きしてたり、撃つ瞬間目を閉じていたりとガンマニアの間では物議をかもした。「羊たちの沈黙｣のジョディー・フォスターはちゃんと目を閉じずに撃っていたからね。
