When punk broke back in 1976, it aimed to sweep away forever the hoary hippy indulgences of the preceding few years. Long-haired blues jams, squealing guitar solos and stomping rock & roll were suddenly and utterly out of order. It was an embargo that--astoundingly, given the wholesale pillaging of all other eras--lasted nearly a quarter-of-a-century. But now, if the underground is anything to go by (and it usually is), that's all over. Firebird, along with the brazen and often brutish likes of
sHEAVY,
Orange Goblin and
Electric Wizard (all of them worshippers at the altar of Metal and most of them stoned to the max), are unashamedly reclaiming the roots of hard rock. Firebird, with their slow, churning riffs, lazy grooves and joyful six-string pyrotechnics, would appear to take half their name from Free's "Fire & Water" and half from Skynyrd's "Freebird", with additional influence coming from Zeppelin's mad-eyed megalomania and Mountain's filthy grind. It's as rough, loud and bloodyminded as you'd expect from a band comprised of members of
Napalm Death,
Spiritual Beggars and
Cathedral. --
