曽我部恵一の作品にはいつも「風景」と「ドラマ」が宿っている。
ここへ来て八ヶ月、と短いタームで届けられたので若干心配になったものの、
いつもの如くまたもや風景に満ちた良作を生み出してくれた。

このアルバムは、前作がポップネスに満ちた優しいアルバムだとしたら
その反動で寂しさや空しさを含んだセンチメンタルな一作だ。
現在の甘すぎる、都合のいいことを歌いすぎるポッポス、又はロックに対する
異議申し立てな意味合いも、もしかしたら含んでいるかもしれない。

一曲目がそれを表しているだろう。タイトルだけ見れば希望的な歌か？と思えるが
実際はもの悲しさを感じさせる、しっとりとした曲になっており、
ラストで歌われる「hot love、cold city」というフレーズが耳に残る。
また「スウィング時代」という曲は実にタイトなロックチューンで、
歌詞もタイトルの通り時代性を感じさせる深みを感じる歌詞になっている。

もちろん、それだけではなく「LOVE SONG」等とびっきりスウィートな曽我部ぶしも有り、
夏にピッタリの爽やかな「センチメンタルな夏」有り、と今作はパッと聴きでのれる
キャッチーな曲が多い。この辺も前作の反動なのかな？と思える。

ベテラン歌手とは思えぬみずみずしさ、且つアンチ精神を含んだとても良いアルバムに
なっていてやはりこの人の才能は尽きないな、と。
10曲とはいえ、ふり幅が広いので飽きずに楽しめます。

　元サニーデイ・サービスのフロントマン、曽我部恵一のソロ。
　本人が主催のrose recordsからは53枚目のリリース。

　音は昭和っぽくて青臭いblues、rock、punkやpopという感じで、ちょっと一括りにはできないのだけど、彼の歌が彼の作品の何よりものアイデンティティになっています。
　"blue"というタイトルは曲の青い感じだけでなく、夏の風や水、夏特有のセンチメンタルな雰囲気が表現されています。

　各種メディアで彼が言っているとおり「カテゴライズを取っ払ってもっと気楽に」みたいな、自由な考え方が生き方にも作品にも出ていて、肩の力を抜いて安心して聴けます。
　その辺は下北のおっさんであり、一児の父親であり、レーベル主催者である彼の貫禄のなせる業なんでしょうか。

　こんなに真っ当に愛やら恋やら歌うおっさんのステキさときたら。

　曽我部の口から「夏」「海」「君」といったフレーズが繰り出されるだけで遠くへ意識が飛んでしまうような人間狂喜乱舞必至の作品。

　曽我部の「夏」とは、海の家から流れてきそうな、能天気で、チャラチャラしたものでもないのは勿論、海岸で夕陽が落ちるのを眺めながらやたらめったに感傷に浸るものでもない。つまり、サザンやJack Johnsonが拾えなかった夏のディテールがすべて詰まっている。

　曽我部の楽曲の主人公は、何故大した理由も無いのに海に向かうのか。それがどうして夏なのか、しかもうだるような、湿り気を帯びた日だったりするのか。もしくは、寝苦しい真夜中に何でこうも恋心が募るのか、無性に走りだしたくなるのか、そして、独りよがりな感じなのか――『blue』は全編それ。「海が見たい」とつい歌ってしまう自身の原風景を再認識し、向き合い、そして決着をつけてしまったかのようだ。
