いわゆる「恐るべき子供たち」テーマのサスペンスですが、米・加・仏の合作ということも関係するのか、限られた登場人物（殆ど５人だけ）と派手さを排した展開で舞台を見ているような雰囲気。
実は原作があるのですが（新潮社から出てましたが絶版）ほぼ忠実に作られていて驚きであります（原作者が脚本を担当していますからね）。
さすがにリンがとった行動に関しては映画ではソフトになっていますが（原作ではガスを使うのです）。しかし「サスペンス映画」を期待してご覧になると肩透かしを食らうかもしれません。
もちろん、ヒロインが直面する危機やその秘密の露呈が物語の推進力になっているのは確かですが、それよりもある種の「ファンタジー」として不思議な魅力を持った異色作というのが相応しい気もします。
リンにとって他の誰よりも重要な人物となる「魔術師」のマリオが登場してからはその色合いがますます濃くなり、その後の展開は良い意味でかなり少女マンガ的であります。
その対極に来るのはリンが「あの人たち」と呼ぶ脅威の象徴的存在、変質者的なフランク・ハレット（Ｍ・シーン）であり、クライマックスはこの二人による命がけの心理戦となります。
このストーリーならもっとねちっこく性的な匂いのする作品になってもおかしくないのに（そういうシーンもあるにはあるのですが）不思議なほど嫌らしさがない。
この点が実はこの作品の最大の魅力かもしれません。
これは、やはりジョディの力が大きいと思います。超然としているわけではないのに確実に誰とも違う孤立した気配が漂っております。原作とはリンのイメージが微妙に違うのですが
（原作どおり前歯が欠けているところは驚きですが）彼女の演技力の賜物なのか直に気にならなくなります。
海辺の町に厳しく淋しい冬が近づいて来る雰囲気が実によく出ていて良いですね。

ご覧になる方は「紅茶とアーモンドクッキー」を用意した上で部屋を暗くしてご覧になることをおススメします
