<ストーリー>
空飛ぶ円盤が地球に飛来、米国の首都ワシントンDCに着陸した。中から現れたのは人間と同じ姿をした異星人クラトゥと、ロボットのゴートだった。クラトゥは地球各国の代表者に、大事なメッセージがあると言うが、疑心暗鬼の政府や軍隊は動揺する。侵略か友好か、はたまた警告なのか、クラトゥはやがてその強大な力を全人類に見せつける。

「市民ケーン」の製作に携わり、95年に91歳で他界するまで数々の名作映画を残したロバート・ワイズ監督作品。
ワイズ監督は「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」や「ウェストサイドストーリー」等の傑作ミュージカルを残した一方で「スタートレック」や「アンドロメダ」のようなSF映画も手掛けている。B級SF映画が全盛期の頃の作品だが、本作はただ侵略者が襲ってくるとかいう単純な話ではなくメッセージ性がある。
子供の頃にテレビでの放送を観たが全身銀色の人型ロボットの目からビームで戦車が消滅していく様は衝撃的だった。目からビームの元ネタはこの映画ではないだろうか？
2枚組になって特典映像も楽しめるが、価格が少々高めの設定なのは数がそれほど出ないからだろうか？
時代を超えて残せる作品。

この映画が製作されたのは東西冷戦下の１９５１年。政治的にこの映画を観るならば、全体主義への強い批判が汲み取れる。

しかし、この映画から伝わる最も大事なメッセージは、政治的なものではなく心理的なものである。これほど意識（既知の領域）と無意識（未知の領域）の関係を見事に描写した映画はなかなかないと思う。この映画の地球人は意識を表し、UFO、クラトゥ、ゴートが無意識を表している。意識と無意識に対応する光と影の使い方も絶妙である。

UFOが地球に着陸した時の地球人の反応は、まさに無意識に対する意識というか自我の防衛である。映画の中の政府のように暴力で対応すれば無意識は暴力で応じ、ボビーやベンソン夫人のように友好的に接すれば無意識は友好的に応じる。意識のレベルから見れば、無意識は未知のもので恐怖の感情を呼び起こすものであるが、より大きな視点から考えるならば、無意識の中にこそ新たな成長の種が眠っているのである。

現代人の多くは意識のレベルにばかり気をとられ、無意識のことを見ようとしない。否定や無視は、一種の暴力である。無意識はその暴力に対して、暴力で応じる。人類が地球を滅亡させるだけの力を持っている今、意識レベルだけを考慮に入れて生きていくのではなく、無意識の存在を認め、敬意を払い、友好的な関係を築いていくことが大事になってくる。そんなことをこの映画は語りかけてくる。

映画の中で、地球を救ったのは一人の普通の女性（この時代で離婚した女性というのは普通でないかもしれないが）であるという点も秀逸であると思う。僕ら一人ひとりの責任と潜在能力は想像以上に大きい。

We are visited by a flying saucer that lands near the U.S. capital. As a precaution the saucer is surrounded by the military with tanks, carbines, and side arms. The ship opens up and a being, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), steps out. He makes a menacing move with a foreign object. A quick thinking well trained military man shoots first.

Why are we being visited? A mysterious man named Mr. Carpenter may hold the answer. However the only people that will listen to the message are the world’s scientists. To bring his point home Klaatu holds a demonstration. The result of the demonstration gives the movie its title “The Day the Earth Stood Still”

Besides being a classic this movie also captures a time. It is intriguing looking at the technology of the time and even the locations before they changed (some have not changed).

It is still fun to watch as Klaatu is encountered, detained, and the state of the governments (does not look like things have changed much). We all want to say to Gort "Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!"

This movie was better built than most for its time and rivals some movies of today. The message is still relevant and we sometimes try to apply the same solution here.
