さてこのＣＤ「ニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバル」の１９６３年（１〜３曲目）と６５年（残り）を１枚にまとめたものであり、１＆２曲目は既発の「セルフレスネス」のマスターからのレストア（既発盤では曲の最後にクロージングアナウンスをかぶせてあったが今回は当然消えています）で、「インプレッションズ」も既発盤の短縮版から、未編集で２３分以上のロングヴァージョンで収録したというスグレモノ！他のレビュアーさんが書かれているように、マッコイ・タイナーの熱演が光る！１９６５年収録曲は既発の「ニュー・シングス・アット・ニューポート（２０００年発売盤、それ以前のものは編集されて短かった）」からコルトレーン・クアルテットの部分のみを抜き出して、１９６３年収録曲と比較できる様に１枚に詰め込んだスグレモノです！なお、全曲２００７年にニューリミッックスしたものです。
私は、どちらも持っていなかったので、この１枚は素晴らしいプレゼントになりました。
素晴らしい！
上記の理由から、既発盤をお持ちの方も買い直す価値有りです！

ちょっと前に出た「One Down One Up」よりコンディションはいい。途中でフェイドアウトすることもない。それで当たり前だけどね。ただし、一つ目の「Favorite Things」はこれまであった「Selflessness」に入ってるのと同じギグに聴こえるが、ミキシングが違うようで詳細は不明（ライナーを読めば書いてあるのかも）。しかしその後にすぐ続く「Impressions」は、こんなにマッコイタイナーのピアノって強かったっけ？って思うほどのすばらしい出来だし、その直後ピアノベースレスでコルトレーンが吹きまくること約10分、これはすごい。めちゃくちゃやってるのか、と思うけど「Impressions」の特徴的なモードの切り替わりが聴いててちゃんとわかるぐらい冷静に吹いてる。聴きながら「うほほほ」と腰が浮いてしまう。その後の「One Down One Up」はその２年後のギグでずっと暗く落ち着いていて、モンク臭いコードの中にコルトレーンの飛ぼうとするけど飛べない、憧れとも諦めともつかない長ーいフレーズがずしっとくる。ふたつめの「Favorite Things」はその前の重々しさを引きずっているような演奏で、ひとつめよりもより遠くを見ようと首を苦しげに伸ばしているような、そんな違いがよくわかる。演奏が終わった後、「もう真夜中近くだから車の運転には気をつけてさっさと帰れ」というようなちょっと疲れたMCが聴衆の興奮覚めやらない様子を伝えている。こんなライブを聴かされた夜に心安く寝られるようなやつはそれこそどうかしてる。この現場にいた人たちが心底うらやましい。

　63年と65年のニューポート・ジャズフェスからの編集盤。63年はTRACK1、2と3。1と2は名作「Selflessness」(AS-9161)に入っている。そして3は78年に出た未発表集に収録されていた不完全TRACKの完全版だが、残念なことにベースソロの音が歪んで聴き苦しい。本CDのトレーンのソロはこの3が一番凄いのに、本当にもったいない。65年はTRACK5と6。5は「New Thing At
Newport」(AS-94)に収録されているが、6は同じく78年に出た未発表集に収録されている。

　65年の演奏を聴いてみて感じることは、、たった2年の間にトレーンの目指す音楽が激変していることであろう。共通のTRACK「My Favorite Things」を聴き比べてみれば明らかですね。このあとしばらくしてマッコイ・タイナーとエルヴィン・ジョーンズは退団し、替わりにアリス・コルトレーンとラシッド・アリが入り、フリージャズに向けてまっしぐらに進んで行くのだが、残された人生はあと2年しかない。今になって振り返ると実に感慨深いものがあります。

　さらに特筆すべきは音質とS/N比がかなり向上していること。ただし、トレーンのサックスの音色が若干ツルンとしていて、「Selflessness」のオリジナルアナログ盤を聴き慣れた耳にはちょっと違和感がある。アナログ盤のサックスの音色はもうちょっとザラっとしているのです。これが今回の担当マスタリング・エンジニアの好みの音なのでしょう。ただし、音全体はアナログ盤を凌ぐ音になっていると思われるので、、「Selflessness」や「New Thing At　Newport」の既発盤CDをお持ちのかたは、この値段なら買い替えるべきです。ゼッタイ！！
