モールス4thフル・アルバム。二階堂和美、小林愛(toddle)、小野眞一(100s)、石田真人(Venus Peter)など一曲ごとに多彩なゲストを迎えて制作された前作から一転、植野隆司(テニスコーツ)が数曲でサックスとハーモニカを披露するのを除き極力ゲストを排し、ベーシック+ヴォーカルを全て一発録りライヴ録音形式にて制作。『ユリイカ』誌の「Jポップの詩学」特集でも絶賛された酒井の日本語詞と、「●●風」とジャンル分け不能、多様性においても独自性においてもずば抜けたソングライティング、遅速&硬軟自由自在のグルーヴ感溢れる演奏とが見事に溶け合った、グループ史上最もダイレクトかつ無駄のない作品に仕上がっている。 アートワークを手掛けたのは、ボニー''プリンス''ビリーやザ・マイクロフォンズのジャケット、アパレルブランドAnd Aのデザインの他、『リラックス』誌でも7ページに渡ってフィーチャーされるなど注目を集めるカイル・フィールド(リトル・ウィングス)。

カッコ悪さはただひたすら真っ直ぐにカッコイイ。ぐるっとまわってなんかない! こんなに説得力のある面白さにそうそう出会えることなんてない。脳みそのシワが私の10倍はあるのだろうと思い知らされました。この音にこのフレーズ、この声、全てがモールスに味方をしている。震えがきました。

モールスと言うとKレコーズやモデスト・マウスを初めとするUSインディとの繋がりの深さがクローズアップされることが多い。では、彼らのサウンドがいわゆる「USインディ」風なのかというとさにあらず。日本語ならではの歌詞の面白さ＋●●風というラベル付けのまるでできない楽曲の幅の広さ…そのサウンドの豊かさは日本という土壌あってのものだ。その独自性こそが海外のバンドを引きつけて止まないのではないか。そうした意味ではこの4thアルバムはモールス・サウンドが一つの到達点に達した大傑作だと思う。和物フォーキィな一曲目からサイケデリックな２曲目、アーシーな３曲目、リズミックな４曲目等々。一曲毎に目まぐるしく曲調が変わるがヴォーカルまで一発録り形式で録音されたゆえのグルーヴがアルバム全体の芯をつないでいる。圧巻は９分に及ぶ８曲目。こんなバンド他にはいません。

モールス独特のポップな曲が好きで購入しましたがだらだらした退屈な曲ばかりでがっかりしました。
音楽通の玄人好きするバンドだとは思いますが「仔猫カレンダー」のような曲も書けるんだからそういうのも2、3曲は入れて欲しいです。
