1960年代の後半より、電気楽器やロック風な奏法を取り入れた、新しい演奏スタイル。ジャズ・ロック、クラシックや現代音楽の要素を取り入れたクロスオーバーを経て、アメリカなどでは1970年代終盤、日本でも同時期から1980年代に入ると、よりソフィスティケイトされたポピュラーな曲想や演奏となった。これを、他のジャンルと融合した音楽としてフュージョンという新たなジャンルで呼ばれた。
